It is firm\u00adly in the tra\u00addi\u00adtion of Thoreau\u2019s jour\u00adnals, and simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adously in that of Sher\u00adwood Anderson\u2019s <em>Wines\u00adburg Ohio<\/em>, though his beau\u00adti\u00adfully styled evo\u00adca\u00adtions of des\u00adper\u00adate lives don\u2019t have the bit\u00adter\u00adness that Anderson\u2019s had. Derleth\u2019s feel\u00ading for nature, both the human kind and the ani\u00admals and plant kind, is intense and metic\u00adu\u00adlously obser\u00advant. His prose is so pre\u00adcise and nat\u00adural that you don\u2019t hear it as another\u2019s voice, but as your own thought.
