<\/a>This was, believe it or not, the first album I ever owned. I grew up in a non-musi\u00adcal fam\u00adi\u00adly, and apart from what\u00adev\u00ader turned up on the radio or tele\u00advi\u00adsion, my expo\u00adsure to music was very lim\u00adit\u00aded. When I acquired a (kit-built) turntable and ampli\u00adfi\u00ader, I ran out and bought the first thing that appealed to me. Hav\u00ading noth\u00ading to go on, I picked Jimi Hen\u00addrix\u2019s Are You Expe\u00adri\u00adenced?<\/em> for no oth\u00ader rea\u00adson than that I liked the cov\u00ader. Small won\u00adder: the jack\u00adet was designed by pio\u00adneer psy\u00adche\u00addel\u00adic pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader Karl Fer\u00adris, whom Hen\u00addrix had select\u00aded because he was \u201cdoing with pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy what I\u2019m doing with music \u2014 going far out beyond the lim\u00adits and blow\u00ading minds\u201d. A lot of six\u00adties psy\u00adche\u00addel\u00adic art looks pret\u00adty cheesy, now, but Fer\u00adris\u2019 work remains fresh and vig\u00ador\u00adous. I pity cur\u00adrent youth, who lis\u00adten to the psy\u00adche\u00addel\u00adic clas\u00adsics bro\u00adken up into iso\u00adlat\u00aded tracks, and must squint to see the album art reduced to twelve cen\u00adtime\u00adtre squares. Are You Expe\u00adri\u00adenced?<\/em> was an expe\u00adri\u00adence<\/span>, not just a jum\u00adble of songs. Blast\u00ading into my naive upbring\u00ading, the raunchy gui\u00adtar and sug\u00adges\u00adtive lyrics opened up a won\u00adder\u00adful world of sin, exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion and delight to me. From the open\u00ading chords of \u201cPur\u00adple Haze\u201d to the last fuzzy blast of \u201cAre You Expe\u00adri\u00adenced?\u201d, I was hyp\u00adno\u00adtized, and dri\u00adven to find more music that would pump hor\u00admones through my body, a quest that has nev\u00ader end\u00aded since. The sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion ele\u00adments in \u201cThird Stone From the Sun\u201d were an added delight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can Are You Expe\u00adri\u00adenced?<\/em> per\u00adform the same func\u00adtion today, in this insipid, fear-rid\u00adden, cen\u00adsored and bar\u00adbarous time? God knows, we need some sort of anthem of free\u00addom. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, no music from the past, no mat\u00adter how splen\u00addid, can per\u00adform this func\u00adtion. Is there anoth\u00ader Jimi out there, strug\u00adgling to be heard in the cacoph\u00ado\u00adny of the accept\u00adable, con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal, and safe?
