<\/a><\/a>The Province of Alber\u00adta has two superb muse\u00adums asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded with out\u00addoor sites. One, of course, is the famed Tyrell Muse\u00adum of Pale\u00adon\u00adtol\u00adogy. The oth\u00ader is Head-Smashed-In Buf\u00adfa\u00adlo Jump, declared a World Her\u00aditage Site by UNESCO<\/span> in 1981, with its Inter\u00adpre\u00adtive Cen\u00adtre. For a peri\u00adod of five thou\u00adsand years, native peo\u00adples of the region drove herds of buf\u00adfa\u00adlo over this cliff. The beasts were dri\u00adven and herd\u00aded to their deaths with aid of a com\u00adplex sys\u00adtem of cairns, fences, and cor\u00adrals, and orga\u00adnized team-work. The bod\u00adies were butchered and processed into pem\u00admi\u00adcan (a spoilage-resis\u00adtant con\u00adcen\u00adtrat\u00aded food) and hun\u00addreds of oth\u00ader prod\u00aducts, which were trad\u00aded across the region. It was vir\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly an indus\u00adtri\u00adal-scale enter\u00adprise. Head-Smashed-In was only one of many such sites in the region, but it is the one most thor\u00adough\u00adly investigated.<\/span><\/p>\n

This book takes Head-Smashed-In as the start\u00ading point for an explo\u00adration of the pre\u00adhis\u00adto\u00adry of the Cana\u00addi\u00adan prairie provinces, exam\u00adin\u00ading the archae\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal record with care, and inter\u00adpret\u00ading it with strict dis\u00adci\u00adpline. But it\u2019s writ\u00adten with a per\u00adson\u00adal voice, and with\u00adout jar\u00adgon or aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic dithering.<\/span><\/p>\n

The author is the Cura\u00adtor of Archae\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy at the Roy\u00adal Alber\u00adta Muse\u00adum, and the world\u2019s author\u00adi\u00adty on buf\u00adfa\u00adlo jumps. The book is extreme\u00adly well-writ\u00adten and orga\u00adnized. It\u2019s mag\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcent\u00adly illus\u00adtrat\u00aded and graph\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly pleas\u00ading, a fine pro\u00adduc\u00adtion in every respect. I can\u2019t think of any bet\u00adter intro\u00adduc\u00adtion to the pre\u00adhis\u00adto\u00adry of our prairie provinces.
