Haydn him\u00adself wrote: \u201c<em>The walls, win\u00addows, and pil\u00adlars of the church were hung with black cloth, and only one large lamp hang\u00ading from the cen\u00adter of the roof broke the solemn dark\u00adness. At mid\u00adday, the doors were closed and the cer\u00ade\u00admo\u00adny began. After a short ser\u00advice the bish\u00adop ascend\u00aded the pul\u00adpit, pro\u00adnounced the first of the sev\u00aden words (or sen\u00adtences) and deliv\u00adered a dis\u00adcourse there\u00adon. This end\u00aded, he left the pul\u00adpit and fell to his knees before the altar. The inter\u00adval was filled by music. The work is star\u00adtling\u00adly sweet for some\u00adthing meant to rep\u00adre\u00adsent the events on Gol\u00adgo\u00adtha, becom\u00ading <em>presto con tut\u00adta la forza<\/em> only in the last sec\u00adtion. It seems more appro\u00adpri\u00adate a musi\u00adcal accom\u00adpa\u00adni\u00adment to con\u00adtem\u00adplat\u00ading sev\u00aden rose gar\u00addens, or sev\u00aden pleas\u00adant after\u00adnoons in coun\u00adtry. But I\u2019m not reli\u00adgious, and the twists and turns with which the devout inter\u00adpret the pas\u00adsion of Christ don\u2019t come nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly to me. I may just not be \u201cget\u00adting it\u201d.
