This four\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry French prose work is an odd item. It\u2019s a \u201croman\u201d \u2014 prose fic\u00adtion. But it\u2019s noth\u00ading like the fan\u00adtas\u00adtic fan\u00adtasies that dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00aded the era. No quests, no drag\u00adons, no trips to the moon. Instead, it\u2019s a real\u00adis\u00adtic nar\u00adra\u00adtive focus\u00ading on tour\u00adna\u00adments and deeds of arms. In the first few chap\u00adters, the cen\u00adtral char\u00adac\u00adter arrives at court as a page, at the age of thir\u00adteen. A Great Lady imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly begins a cam\u00adpaign of seduc\u00adtion, twist\u00ading and tor\u00adment\u00ading the lad until he sur\u00adren\u00adders his inno\u00adcence. This is coy\u00adly, but still pret\u00adty bla\u00adtant\u00adly recount\u00aded by the author. But the romance is meant to be edi\u00adfy\u00ading as well as tit\u00adil\u00adlat\u00ading\u2026 she is giv\u00aden to quot\u00ading Greek philoso\u00adphers while mak\u00ading love, and rec\u00adom\u00admends a long list of books for him to read between carv\u00ading the King\u2019s roasts, learn\u00ading to fight, and pro\u00advid\u00ading her with stud ser\u00advice. Few teenagers have to face this kind of stress, today.<\/span><\/p>\n
