He did not, in fact, offer a Uni\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan the\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy, but mere\u00adly a dif\u00adfer\u00adent inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of the Trin\u00adi\u00adty.&nbsp;<!--more--> What is impor\u00adtant, how\u00adev\u00ader, is that he main\u00adtained a firm belief in the right to free thought and inquiry in an intol\u00ader\u00adant age.&nbsp;Sen\u00adtenced to death, and burned in effi\u00adgy by the Catholic Church, he fled from France, mak\u00ading the fool\u00adish error of pass\u00ading through Calv\u00adin\u2019s total\u00adi\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan dic\u00adta\u00adtor\u00adship in Gene\u00adva.&nbsp;Calvin had already secret\u00adly com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcat\u00aded with the Catholic cler\u00adgy to encour\u00adage his cap\u00adture and exe\u00adcu\u00adtion.&nbsp;When Servi\u00adtus fell into his clutch\u00ades, the Protes\u00adtant rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adary seized him, con\u00adcoct\u00aded a ludi\u00adcrous heresy tri\u00adal, and had him burnt alive. This was done in a spe\u00adcial\u00adly sadis\u00adtic fash\u00adion \u2014 a slow roast\u00ading on a spit, so that he remained con\u00adscious in tor\u00adment for half an hour.&nbsp;Calvin rather liked this sort of thing, and did it to thir\u00adty-five oth\u00ader peo\u00adple. He even con\u00addemned two chil\u00addren to the flames.&nbsp;Nei\u00adther Protes\u00adtant nor Catholic church\u00ades were in any mood to see free\u00addom of thought, speech, or con\u00adscience pro\u00admot\u00aded by anybody.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Servi\u00adtus is for\u00adgot\u00adten by most his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans, except those inter\u00adest\u00aded in the Anabap\u00adtist and Uni\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan move\u00adments.&nbsp;The Uni\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adans take him as the start\u00ading point of their move\u00adment, though on strict\u00adly the\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal grounds, this is not plau\u00adsi\u00adble.&nbsp;But it was real\u00adly his ideas of reli\u00adgious tol\u00ader\u00adance and free inquiry, a firmer step for\u00adward in the path ten\u00adta\u00adtive\u00adly explored by Eras\u00admus, that they hon\u00adour him for.&nbsp;So should we.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the three&nbsp;books:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">18244.&nbsp;(Roland H.
