The pres\u00adti\u00adgious Patiala Gha\u00adrana dates from Mughal times, but it has con\u00adsis\u00adtent\u00adly fos\u00adtered inno\u00adva\u00adtion, rather than strict clas\u00adsi\u00adcal ortho\u00addoxy. Chakraborty is one of its many stars. I have two pieces sung by him: <em>Abho\u00adgi<\/em>, and a full<em> khyal<\/em> using the South Indi\u00adan raga <em>Ham\u00adsad\u00adhwani<\/em>. This last has an emo\u00adtion\u00adal punch that real\u00adly got to me, espe\u00adcial\u00adly at the point of one impos\u00adsi\u00adbly long-held note that lifts the piece into sub\u00adlim\u00adi\u00adty. The tabla and har\u00admo\u00adni\u00adum (per\u00adhaps his broth\u00ader San\u00adjay?) are apt\u00adly under\u00adstat\u00aded.
