Edgar Pang\u00adborn\u2019s gen\u00adtle and humane nov\u00adels had a tremen\u00addous influ\u00adence on me. The book that real\u00adly hit the mark was <em>A Mir\u00adror For Observers<\/em>, but the <em>Davy<\/em> sto\u00adries were almost as good. This nov\u00adel intro\u00adduces the char\u00adac\u00adter at the age of four\u00adteen, but hops back and forth in time. The back\u00adground is post-apoc\u00ada\u00adlyp\u00adtic, with the human pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion of upstate New York and New Eng\u00adland reduced to an ear\u00adly Medieval lev\u00adel of tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy and the Huly Mur\u00adcan Church pro\u00advid\u00ading what lit\u00adtle social cohe\u00adsion exists. But this is not a remake of Miller\u2019s&nbsp;<em>A Can\u00adti\u00adcle For Lei\u00adbowitz<\/em>. Pang\u00adborn saw orga\u00adnized reli\u00adgion as more of a repres\u00adsive and regres\u00adsive force than Miller did. Noth\u00ading rings false in Pang\u00adborn\u2019s imag\u00adined world. The young Davy is a randy lit\u00adtle raga\u00admuf\u00adfin, and his picaresque progress is more along the line of Field\u00ading than Bun\u00adyan. But unlike most picaresque writ\u00aders, Pang\u00adborn nev\u00ader placed sex in oppo\u00adsi\u00adtion to love, or to moral\u00adi\u00adty. Rather, he under\u00adstood that sex stands at the heart of moral\u00adi\u00adty. Spi\u00adder Robin\u00adson has remarked that \u201cEdgar Pang\u00adborn said again and again in his books that love is not a con\u00addi\u00adtion or an event or even a state of mind \u2014 that love is a coun\u00adtry, which we are some\u00adtimes priv\u00adi\u00adleged to&nbsp;visit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A most plea\u00adsur\u00adable third read\u00ading of an old favourite of mine.
