The encounter is seen from the Sami point of view, and all the dia\u00adlogue is in Sami, a non-Indo-Euro\u00adpean lan\u00adguage in the Finno-Ugric fam\u00adi\u00adly. To this day, many Sami con\u00adtin\u00adue to live an arc\u00adtic life-style of rein\u00addeer herd\u00ading and hunt\u00ading. There cus\u00adtoms are so sim\u00adi\u00adlar to those of the native peo\u00adple of North\u00adern Cana\u00adda that know\u00ading the lan\u00adguage was unnec\u00ades\u00adsary for me. It was easy enough to guess what was hap\u00adpen\u00ading and what peo\u00adple were say\u00ading. The act\u00ading is effec\u00adtive, espe\u00adcial\u00adly that of 15-year-old Mikkel Gaup as the pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnist, a youth who works out a scheme to defeat the invaders and thus earns the posi\u00adtion of shaman. The cin\u00ade\u00admatog\u00adra\u00adphy is crisply beau\u00adti\u00adful. This is basi\u00adcal\u00adly anoth\u00ader \u201cresis\u00adtance myth\u201d \u2014 a bare bones real\u00adis\u00adtic ver\u00adsion of the tale told in fan\u00adtas\u00adtic form in Avatar.
