Mulisch is intel\u00adli\u00adgent, learned, and absolute\u00adly sat\u00adu\u00adrated with con\u00adven\u00adtional sys\u00adtems and intel\u00adlec\u00adtual ortho\u00addoxy. There is a lot of thought in this book, but not a par\u00adti\u00adcle of <em>orig\u00adi\u00adnal <\/em>thought. This is, unfor\u00adtu\u00adnately, sup\u00adposed to be the great mas\u00adter\u00adpiece of mod\u00adern Dutch lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture. Well, the Dutch have blessed the world with won\u00adder\u00adful paint\u00ading and archi\u00adtec\u00adture, and their trance djs are superb, but lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture just doesn\u2019t seem to be their strong point. Nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless, I might rec\u00adom\u00admend it for a lazy afternoon\u2019s read\u00ading.
