In 1931, the young com\u00admer\u00adcial artist Theodore Seuss Geisel, who had already assumed the non-de-plume of \u201cDr. Seuss\u201d, was com\u00admis\u00adsioned to il\u00adlus\u00adtrate three col\u00adlec\u00adtions of amus\u00ading quotes from school essays. His biog\u00adra\u00adphy states that it was this that con\u00advinced him that he should try mak\u00ading a book for chil\u00addren. Dr. Seuss\u2019 inim\u00aditable style is already evi\u00addent in these illus\u00adtra\u00adtions. <\/span>The school\u00adboy bloop\u00aders select\u00aded are still very fun\u00adny. Some exam\u00adples: \u201cGrav\u00adity was dis\u00adcov\u00adered by Isaac Wal\u00adton. It is chiefly notice\u00adable in the autumn, when apples are falling off trees\u201d, \u201cThe Zodi\u00adac is the Zoo of the Sky, where lions, goats, vir\u00adgins and oth\u00ader ani\u00admals go after they are dead\u201d, \u201cA cow is very like a bull, but a bull hurts more\u201d, \u201cTo stop a nose\u00adbleed, stand on your head till your heart stops beat\u00ading.\u201d, \u201cThe arti\u00adchoke was an ancient instru\u00adment of tor\u00adture\u201d, \u201cHered\u00adity means that if your grand\u00adfa\u00adther didn\u2019t have any chil\u00addren, then your father prob\u00ada\u00adbly wouldn\u2019t have had any, and nei\u00adther would you, prob\u00ada\u00adbly.\u201d, \u201cThomas Paine was a rare indi\u00advid\u00adual, obsessed by com\u00admon sense.\u201d, \u201cCana\u00addi\u00adans raise bowl wee\u00advils for their wool.\u201d, and who could for\u00adget \u201cSocrates was addict\u00aded to hem\u00adlock, which even\u00adtu\u00adally cor\u00adrupted his morals.\u201d? Dr. Seuss\u2019s draw\u00adings do full jus\u00adtice to these gems of error. I don\u2019t doubt that this book is col\u00adlectible, but it would take a gang of furi\u00adous Scots\u00admen armed with clay\u00admores to pry it away from me.
