Few tourists take the trou\u00adble to jour\u00adney into the remote dis\u00adtrict in North\u00adern Que\u00adbec where this huge struc\u00adture is. It\u2019s not just the gigan\u00adtic sta\u00adtis\u00adtics (even the 735,000-volt trans\u00admis\u00adsion lines were an engi\u00adneer\u00ading achieve\u00adment on an unprece\u00addented scale), but the human dra\u00adma of its con\u00adstruc\u00adtion. The authors cap\u00adture this in both prose and about a hun\u00addred beau\u00adti\u00adful draw\u00adings. Lili R\u00e9thi, who looked some\u00adthing like Miss Marple, was one of the great\u00adest archi\u00adtec\u00adtural and engi\u00adneer\u00ading artists, and she died short\u00adly after com\u00adplet\u00ading the Man\u00adic 5 draw\u00adings. Her work, which is of great artis\u00adtic val\u00adue in my view, is known only to archi\u00adtects and engineers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?attachment_id=9677\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9677\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9677\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/06-04-26-READ-14653.-Lili-R\u00e9thi-William-W.-Jacobus-Manic-5-The-Building-of-the-Daniel-Johnson-Dam-pic-2.jpg\" alt=\"06-04-26 READ 14653. Any\u00adone who has spent any time in Earth orbit is quite famil\u00adiar with it, since it stands out like a bull\u2019s\u2011eye, seen from space. The project flood\u00aded the impact crater cre\u00adated by a five km wide aster\u00adoid that struck Que\u00adbec towards the end of the Tri\u00adas\u00adsic. The Man\u00adi\u00adcoua\u00adgan lake acts as a giant hydraulic bat\u00adtery for Hydro-Que\u00adbec. In the peak peri\u00adod of the win\u00adter cold, the tur\u00adbines are run all the time at peak load to meet the mas\u00adsive elec\u00adtri\u00adcal heat\u00ading needs of the province. Dur\u00ading the sum\u00admer, the sur\u00adplus is sold to the New Eng\u00adland grid. The island inside the lake is larg\u00ader than Rhode Island. Some of the lakes with\u00adin the island with\u00adin the lake have large islands in them.
