Lau\u00adrence Olivi\u00ader treat\u00aded it more or less this way in his bril\u00adliant 1944 film ver\u00adsion. But the play con\u00adtains many ele\u00adments that don\u2019t fit into this inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion. I\u2019m more inclined to see it as a study of how a charis\u00admatic fig\u00adure can delude oth\u00aders and him\u00adself, using var\u00adi\u00adous tech\u00adniques of manip\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion. Shake\u00adspeare was always aware of these tech\u00adniques. Marc Antony\u2019s speech to the plebs in <em>Julius Cae\u00adsar<\/em> is prac\u00adti\u00adcally a text\u00adbook on how to manip\u00adu\u00adlate a crowd. Hen\u00adry uses sim\u00adi\u00adlar meth\u00adods to keep his war in France rolling, and Shake\u00adspear iron\u00adi\u00adcally points out the end results for the ordi\u00adnary men who are caught up in his ambi\u00adtions. He does this very sub\u00adtly, how\u00adev\u00ader. The play also con\u00adtains the ances\u00adtor of all those Amer\u00adi\u00adcan World War <span class=\"caps\">II<\/span> movie scenes where the infantry pla\u00adtoon has a guy from Texas, a guy from Iowa, a guy from New Eng\u00adland, and a guy from Brook\u00adlyn, each with his accent and com\u00adic shtick.&nbsp;In this case, it\u2019s Gow\u00ader (Eng\u00adlish), Fluellen (Welsh), Mac\u00admor\u00adris (Irish) and Jamy (Scot\u00adtish) each play\u00ading out their eth\u00adnic stereo\u00adtypes which, appar\u00adent\u00adly, have remained unchanged for the last five hun\u00addred&nbsp;years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At first glance, Hen\u00adry V seems to be one of Shakespeare\u2019s sim\u00adpler plays.
