This is an ear\u00adly nov\u00adel of his. His writ\u00ading was not quite as sharp as it has since become, but this nov\u00adel still held my atten\u00adtion. In part, it\u2019s because the sto\u00adry (a sort of fusion of Charles Dick\u00adens and Ray\u00admond Chan\u00addler) focus\u00ades on my own neig\u00adbour\u00adhood in Toron\u00adto, and con\u00adcerns the under\u00adside of that neigh\u00adbour\u00adhood at the very time when I was myself part of that under\u00adside. I rec\u00adog\u00adnize and remem\u00adber almost every phys\u00adi\u00adcal fea\u00adture in the book.
