The film still holds up well as an enter\u00adtain\u00ading adven\u00adture, after 68 years.&nbsp;It helps that it was done in the superb colour process of that era \u2014 bet\u00adter, but more expen\u00adsive, than the process used in the 1950\u2019s and 1960\u2019s.&nbsp;<\/span>The Robin Hood tales are sup\u00adposed to take place in the Twelfth Cen\u00adtu\u00adry, but they first appear in a series of folk bal\u00adlads that emerged cen\u00adturies after the time, though <em>Piers Plough\u00adman<\/em>, writ\u00adten in 1370, refers to \u201cthe rhymes of Robin Hood\u201d. The Robin Hood of the film, our Robin Hood, is essen\u00adtial\u00adly the one cre\u00adat\u00aded by the Nine\u00adteenth Cen\u00adtu\u00adry chil\u00addren\u2019s writer and (bril\u00adliant) illus\u00adtra\u00adtor, Howard Pyle.&nbsp;The film is fair\u00adly con\u00adsis\u00adtent with Pyle\u2019s Robin.&nbsp;But f<span style=\"color: #000000;\">or mil\u00adlions of peo\u00adple around the world Robin Hood will always be Errol Fly\u00adnn, and the myth\u00adi\u00adcal hero of Britain incar\u00adnate in a rogu\u00adish and rib\u00adald Tasmanian.<\/span><br>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s doubt\u00adful that any\u00adone will ever match the charm that Errol Fly\u00adnn brought to the role of Robin Hood in 1938.
