The con\u00adtest between Catholi\u00adcism and Protes\u00adtantism dur\u00ading the Ref\u00ador\u00adma\u00adtion (in which both sides were relent\u00adless\u00adly fanat\u00adi\u00adcal and vicious), is still played out in Eng\u00adlish film and lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture to this very day. This par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar film is pret\u00adty obvi\u00adous in its par\u00adti\u00adsan\u00adship: Protes\u00adtantism (sym\u00adbol\u00adized by Eliz\u00ada\u00adbeth) is good and Catholi\u00adcism is bad. In Eng\u00adland, there is still a kind of anti-Catholic sen\u00adti\u00adment which is played out in car\u00adtoon form in films such as this. Every clich\u00e9 is there. For\u00adeign Catholic priests skulk around in the shad\u00adows with sin\u00adis\u00adter, swirling robes, and look like demons. A French noble\u00adman is a scream\u00ading fag, minc\u00ading about. Eliz\u00ada\u00adbeth spouts anachro\u00adnis\u00adtic sen\u00adti\u00adments of self\u00adless patri\u00ado\u00adtism and \u201cindi\u00advid\u00adual con\u00adscience\u201d. Her exe\u00adcu\u00adtions and per\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adtions are explained away as unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate zeal by sub\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnates, or under\u00adstand\u00adable reac\u00adtions to treach\u00adery, or nec\u00ades\u00adsary steps in a grand plan to build the future glo\u00adries of Eng\u00adland (cue the Elgar march\u00ades). Essex doesn\u2019t real\u00adly mind hav\u00ading his head chopped off \u2014 it\u2019s all part of true love. Mary Queen of Scots is men\u00adtioned, briefly, but there\u2019s no fol\u00adlow up. Such side-tak\u00ading is com\u00admon enough, and there are pro-Catholic inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtions that are every bit as sil\u00adly. But in this film, his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal facts are so gross\u00adly mis\u00adrep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00aded that no amount of act\u00ading or cos\u00adtume splen\u00addour can make it worth watch\u00ading with\u00adout bel\u00adly laughs. Siskel &<\/span> Ebert loved this film, but I don\u2019t think they paid much atten\u00adtion in high school his\u00adto\u00adry class.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
