I crossed the Pent\u00adland Firth to Orkney on the Ham\u00adnavoe, a fine\u00adly appoint\u00aded, Finnish-made ship which sails to the Orca\u00addi\u00adan port of Strom\u00adness. But before it reached the Orkney \u201cMain\u00adland,\u201d * it passed close to the west\u00adern end of the Isle of Hoy. Here are the Unit\u00aded King\u00addom\u2019s high\u00adest sea-cliffs, as high as 350 m\/1150 f. Struck by the after\u00adnoon light, they were extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnar\u00adi\u00adly beau\u00adti\u00adful. If my trip had end\u00aded at this place, I would have pro\u00adnounced it entire\u00adly worth\u00adwhile. We passed by the Old Man of Hoy, a stone stack sep\u00ada\u00adrat\u00aded from the cliff\u00adsthat ris\u00ades 137 m\/450 f from the waves.  Sun\u00adlight reflect\u00aded off hun\u00addreds of seabirds, cre\u00adat\u00ading swarms of bright specks that swooped and dove against the back\u00addrop of the cliffs. These are made of young sand\u00adstone, in hor\u00adi\u00adzon\u00adtal lay\u00aders of rusty red, grey, and sun\u00adlit gold, bro\u00adken by ver\u00adti\u00adcal cracks that, here and there, are cov\u00adered with green moss. Hoy is the wildest of the larg\u00ader islands, with the high\u00adest hills, and only a few inhabitants.<\/span><\/p>\n
