\"18-06-30<\/a>It\u2019s fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00ading to see the twist\u00ading and turn\u00ading in this film adap\u00adta\u00adtion of Ten\u00adnessee Williams\u2019 play. In the 1950\u2019s, Amer\u00adi\u00adcan film was sub\u00adject to gov\u00adern\u00adment cen\u00adsor\u00adship under the noto\u00adri\u00adous Hays Act, and to even more dis\u00adgust\u00ading self-imposed cen\u00adsor\u00adship under the stu\u00addios\u2019 \u201cvol\u00adun\u00adtary code\u201d. \u201cIt was like writ\u00ading for Prav\u00adda,\u201d said Gore Vidal, who script\u00aded the film. In a won\u00adder\u00adful doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtary called The Cel\u00adlu\u00adloid Clos\u00adet<\/em>, he describes his repeat\u00aded meet\u00adings with a Jesuit priest who, appar\u00adent\u00adly, had life-and-death pow\u00aders over any film pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. Appar\u00adent\u00adly, the very con\u00adcept<\/em> of homo\u00adsex\u00adu\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty could not be allowed to appear on film. Since this was the cen\u00adtral ele\u00adment of the plot, the result is a strange, almost hal\u00adlu\u00adci\u00adna\u00adto\u00adry atmos\u00adphere in which char\u00adac\u00adters talk for ten minute stretch\u00ades of oblique hints and enig\u00admat\u00adic gri\u00admaces, mere\u00adly to avoid men\u00adtion\u00ading that an absent char\u00adac\u00adter (who is dead) was gay! All this riga\u00adma\u00adrole is being done by Eliz\u00ada\u00adbeth Tay\u00adlor dur\u00ading the peri\u00adod when she was a bril\u00adliant actress, Kather\u00adine Hep\u00adburn (who was always a bril\u00adliant actress), and Mont\u00adgomery Clift. Clift was also a gift\u00aded actor, but at the time, he was recov\u00ader\u00ading from a car acci\u00addent that had dis\u00adfig\u00adured his face, and was sat\u00adu\u00adrat\u00aded with pain killers. He was also a clos\u00adet\u00aded gay, him\u00adself. The scenes when all three of them are togeth\u00ader are so filled with repres\u00adsion and ten\u00adsion that they count among the most bizarre and intense in film his\u00adto\u00adry. A view\u00ader who is under twen\u00adty-five will prob\u00ada\u00adbly find the whole thing incom\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsi\u00adble. \u201cWhat the hell are these peo\u00adple talk\u00ading about, or more pre\u00adcise\u00adly, why are they not<\/em> talk\u00ading about it, what is every\u00adbody upset about it, and what on earth is going on?\u201d was the response of one younger friend of mine. The whole thing was so alien to his expe\u00adri\u00adence and sen\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties that he could make no sense of it. And I couldn\u2019t have explained it with\u00adout under\u00adtak\u00ading a five hour dis\u00adcourse on the trans\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtions in North Amer\u00adi\u00adcan soci\u00adety in the lasty fifty years.
