The huge west\u00adern Chi\u00adnese province of Sichuan has its own, dis\u00adtinct his\u00adtory. It con\u00adsists of a broad and fer\u00adtile basin around the city of Cheng\u00addu, ringed by a sparse\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlated wilder\u00adness of moun\u00adtains, forests and swamps. While this was a cen\u00adter of ancient non-Han civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion as ear\u00adly as the sec\u00adond mil\u00adle\u00adnnium BC<\/span>, it grad\u00adu\u00adally became Sini\u00adfied over the cen\u00adturies, and the city and fer\u00adtile regions are inhab\u00adited by Han Chi\u00adnese speak\u00ading a south\u00adwest\u00adern dialect of Man\u00addarin. How\u00adever, most of the province con\u00adsists of rugged moun\u00adtains, and these are the home of many minor\u00adity groups, eth\u00adni\u00adcally and lin\u00adguis\u00adti\u00adcally not at all Chi\u00adnese. Among them are the Yi, relat\u00aded to the Burmese, the Qiang, and the Naxi (or Nakhi). The west\u00adern half of the province is cul\u00adtur\u00adal\u00adly clos\u00ader to Tibet, many of the minori\u00adties speak\u00ading dialects of Tibetan, or close\u00adly relat\u00aded lan\u00adguages. <\/span>All these minori\u00adties have dis\u00adtinc\u00adtive musi\u00adcal tra\u00addi\u00adtions, and the met\u00adro\u00adpol\u00adi\u00adtan musi\u00adcal main\u00adstream of Chi\u00adna has drawn from them with the same mix\u00ading and min\u00ading process that went on in the devel\u00adop\u00adment of America\u2019s folk music. The album I have, Sichuan Folk Song and Bal\u00adlad, Vol\u00adume 2<\/em> gives a good sam\u00adple of this vari\u00adety. Per\u00adson\u00adally, the more \u201cfolky\u201d the songs are, the more they appeal to me. I par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly like the Naxi song \u201cThis Hill is Not As High As That One\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

China\u2019s many eth\u00adnic minori\u00adties, who com\u00adprise tens of mil\u00adlions of peo\u00adple, have been hid\u00adden from the world\u2019s view by mil\u00adlennia of obses\u00adsive impe\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal cen\u00adtral\u00adism and racism. In some cas\u00ades, there are cul\u00adtures of a mil\u00adlion or more peo\u00adple about whom one can\u00adnot find a sin\u00adgle book in a large uni\u00adver\u00adsity library. Can you imag\u00adine what it would mean if there was not a sin\u00adgle book in a major library devot\u00aded to Wales, or the Basques, or to Esto\u00adnia? For\u00adtu\u00adnately, the musi\u00adcal wealth of Sichuan can give us a foot-in-the-door to cel\u00ade\u00adbrat\u00ading a diver\u00adsity that has been kept from our view by ide\u00adol\u00adogy and intel\u00adlec\u00adtual laziness.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
