Can you pic\u00adture Mau\u00adrit\u00adian food? Prob\u00ada\u00adbly not. Few places sound more exot\u00adic and out-of-the-way. But Mau\u00adri\u00adtius was a key point on the sea lanes of the British Empire. A for\u00admer British colony with a pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion speak\u00ading a French patois, but descend\u00aded from South Asians, Africans, Por\u00adtuguese, Dutch, Arabs, and what\u00adever else wan\u00addered by, Mau\u00adri\u00adtius pro\u00advides a sophis\u00adti\u00adcated, cos\u00admopoli\u00adtan cui\u00adsine. Very tasty. Much the same can be said of the&nbsp;music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But there is not just Mau\u00adrit\u00adian music to lis\u00adten to. There is R\u00e9u\u00adnion, an over\u00adseas <em>d\u00e9parte\u00adment<\/em> of France, set\u00adtled by Africans, Chi\u00adnese, Malays, and Tamils. There are the Islam\u00adic Comoros, and the close\u00adly relat\u00aded French pos\u00adses\u00adsion of May\u00adotte. There is the Repub\u00adlic of the Sey\u00adchelles, large\u00adly Catholic, though for\u00admerly a British colony, and the most indebt\u00aded coun\u00adtry, per capi\u00adta, in the world. There is tiny Rodrigues. And final\u00adly, there is the huge and pop\u00adu\u00adlous island of Mada\u00adgas\u00adcar, whose cul\u00adture and lan\u00adguage come orig\u00adi\u00adnally from Bor\u00adneo, half-way around the world from them. The diver\u00adsity of the nations at the west\u00adern end of the Indi\u00adan Ocean pro\u00adduces a delight\u00adful vari\u00adety of music. The per\u00adform\u00aders in this col\u00adlec\u00adtion include Tari\u00adka, Feo-Gasy, Ricky Randim\u00adbiari\u00adson, Jean-No\u00ebl, and Lego from Mada\u00adgas\u00adcar; Denis Azor, and Kaya from Mau\u00adri\u00adtius; Danyel Ward, Fran\u00e7oise Guim\u00adbert, Baster, Tam-Tam Des Cools from R\u00e9u\u00adnion; Kaskav\u00adel from Rodrigues; M\u2019Toro Chamou er les Watoro from May\u00adotte; Belle Lumi\u00e8re from Comoros; Sey\u00adchelles String Band and Sey\u00adchelles All Stars; and even a band from Zanz\u00adibar (Cul\u00adture Music Club), which is part of Tan\u00adzanyia, but an off\u00adshore island. But if there is any\u00adone who could be called a big star, it is Ren\u00e9 Lacaille, the mas\u00adter of the spicy <em>s\u00e9ga<\/em> rhythms of R\u00e9u\u00adnion, here per\u00adform\u00ading with Amer\u00adi\u00adcan gui\u00adtarist Bob Broz\u00adman. Lacaille is well known in the French music scene, and has suc\u00adcess\u00adfully toured here in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rough Guide com\u00adpi\u00adla\u00adtions are always well cho\u00adsen. It is unlike\u00adly that you will come across most of the this mate\u00adr\u00adial, even in a well-stocked \u201cworld music\u201d store. The music is most\u00adly upbeat and dance\u00adable. After Lacaille, I was most drawn to the Mala\u00adgasy musi\u00adcians, espe\u00adcially Feo-Gasy, but it would be hard to choose favourites.
