sep\u00ada\u00adrate\u00adly to Port\u00adland, Ore\u00adgon to start a career in music.&nbsp;Port\u00adland, nowa\u00addays, is what Seat\u00adtle was in the 1980\u2019s: a con\u00adsis\u00adtent gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor of good new music.&nbsp;<!--more-->The scene is eclec\u00adtic, with punksters rub\u00adbing shoul\u00adders with indie rock\u00aders, folkies, and world music types.&nbsp;The Builders and the Butch\u00aders are basi\u00adcal\u00adly indie rock\u00aders, but their music is suf\u00adfused with strains of folk and gospel.&nbsp;There\u2019s noth\u00ading wimpy to be heard on their sec\u00adond album, <em>Sal\u00adva\u00adtion is a Deep Dark Well<\/em> (2010).&nbsp;It\u2019s one of my favourites of this year.&nbsp;I\u2019ve re-played it a num\u00adber of times, even though my new lis\u00adten\u00ading back\u00adlog press\u00ades for atten\u00adtion.&nbsp;Front\u00adman Ryan Sollee pro\u00advides vig\u00ador\u00adous vocals and gui\u00adtar.&nbsp;The songs bal\u00adance tune\u00adful acces\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty with intel\u00adli\u00adgent lyrics and skill\u00adful musi\u00adcian\u00adship.&nbsp;<em>Barcelona <\/em>and <em>Vam\u00adpire Lake<\/em> are real\u00adly fine, but all eleven songs are good.&nbsp;I par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly like Har\u00advey Tum\u00adbleson\u2019s man\u00addolin and ban\u00adjo work, but all the back\u00adup is great, includ\u00ading a host of guest play\u00aders that include sev\u00ader\u00adal cel\u00adlists.&nbsp;But this crowd\u00aded line-up nev\u00ader feels exces\u00adsive.&nbsp;Every\u00adthing is there for a rea\u00adson, and the result\u00ading sound is crisp, not murky.&nbsp;Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, I haven\u2019t been able to acquire the
