{"id":3261,"date":"2010-11-17T21:07:17","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T02:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?p=3261"},"modified":"2026-01-27T23:57:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T04:57:50","slug":"bachs-1046","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?p=3261","title":{"rendered":"Bach\u2019s 1046"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- p { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; } --><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first of the Bran\u00adden\u00adburg Con\u00adcer\u00adtos, cat\u00ada\u00adlog # bwv1046, is actu\u00adal\u00adly enti\u00adtled <em>Con\u00adcer\u00adto 1<\/em><sup><em>mo<\/em><\/sup><em> \u00e0 2 Corni di Cac\u00adcia, 3 Hautb: \u00e8 Bas\u00adsono, Vio\u00adli\u00adno Pic\u00adco\u00adlo con\u00adcer\u00adta\u00adto, 2 Vio\u00adli\u00adni, una Vio\u00adla \u00e8 Vio\u00adlon\u00adcel\u00adlo, col Bas\u00adso Con\u00adtin\u00aduo. <\/em>It has four move\u00adments, unlike the oth\u00ader five con\u00adcer\u00adtos, which have three.&nbsp;You would think that the pat\u00adtern <em>alle\u00adgro \u2014 ada\u00adgio \u2014 alle\u00adgro \u2014 min\u00aduet<\/em> would make it clum\u00adsy, but for some rea\u00adson, it works in this case.&nbsp;The final min\u00aduet does\u00adn\u2019t seem out of place or anti-cli\u00admac\u00adtic.&nbsp;Noth\u00ading could be a bet\u00adter intro\u00adduc\u00adtion to the plea\u00adsures of baroque music.&nbsp;<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My favourite record\u00adings of it are Trevor Pin\u00adnock\u00ad\u2019s Eng\u00adlish Con\u00adsort 1988 on Arkiv (avail\u00adable on <span class=\"caps\">CD<\/span>), and the Pail\u00adlard Cham\u00adber Orches\u00adtra record\u00ading with Jean-Pierre Ram\u00adpal and Mau\u00adrice Andr\u00e9, on vinyl.&nbsp;I haven\u2019t kept up with more con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary record\u00adings.&nbsp;I\u2019m sure that there are many fine ones.&nbsp;Some may pre\u00adfer per\u00adfor\u00admances on \u201corig\u00adi\u00adnal instru\u00adments\u201d (instru\u00adments fash\u00adioned and tuned as they were in Bach\u2019s time).&nbsp;The oth\u00ader impor\u00adtant vari\u00adable (oth\u00ader than sim\u00adple musi\u00adcal tal\u00adent) is the choice of tem\u00adpi.&nbsp;Today\u2019s inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtions tend to gal\u00adlop along very quick\u00adly, based on pre\u00adsump\u00adtions about the play\u00ading style in Bach\u2019s day.&nbsp;The rea\u00adson I like Pin\u00adnock\u00ad\u2019s inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion is that he does\u00adn\u2019t rush it.&nbsp;Is this less authen\u00adtic?&nbsp;I dun\u00adno.&nbsp;But Pin\u00adnock\u00ad\u2019s pace just seems right to me on gut feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 1721, while Bach was out buy\u00ading a harp\u00adsi\u00adchord, he bumped into the Mar\u00adgrave of Bran\u00adden\u00adburg, who asked him to send him some con\u00adcer\u00adtos.&nbsp;Bach quick\u00adly select\u00aded six con\u00adcer\u00adtos from his recent out\u00adput, tart\u00aded them up a bit, and sent them with a ded\u00adi\u00adca\u00adtion.&nbsp;In those days, you were smart to leap at any chance of roy\u00adal, or near-roy\u00adal patron\u00adage.&nbsp;The Mar\u00adgrave is said to have nev\u00ader even looked at them, but his title has become the sin\u00adgle most famil\u00adiar word in baroque music.&nbsp;When I worked at a record store, the staff sim\u00adply called them \u201cburg\u00aders.\u201d&nbsp;We casu\u00adal\u00adly tot\u00aded up the num\u00adber of burg\u00aders we sold every&nbsp;day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their endur\u00ading pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adty and imme\u00addi\u00adate appeal to the begin\u00adning lis\u00adten\u00ader don\u2019t in the least indi\u00adcate any lack of sub\u00adtle\u00adty.&nbsp;The first con\u00adcer\u00adto can be heard and appre\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded by a child, and still seem entranc\u00ading to some\u00adone who has grown jad\u00aded with a life\u00adtime of listening.<br>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first of the Bran\u00adden\u00adburg Con\u00adcer\u00adtos, cat\u00ada\u00adlog # bwv1046, is actu\u00adal\u00adly enti\u00adtled Con\u00adcer\u00adto 1mo \u00e0 2 Corni di Cac\u00adcia, 3 Hautb: \u00e8 Bas\u00adsono, Vio\u00adli\u00adno Pic\u00adco\u00adlo con\u00adcer\u00adta\u00adto, 2 Vio\u00adli\u00adni, una Vio\u00adla \u00e8 Vio\u00adlon\u00adcel\u00adlo, col Bas\u00adso Con\u00adtin\u00aduo.
