The sec\u00adond sto\u00adry is set in mod\u00adern times, and fol\u00adlows a young girl who flees sex\u00adual abuse from her mother\u2019s boyfriend, and lives in a Lon\u00addon \u201csquat\u201d. Inter\u00adspersed through these episodes are news\u00adpa\u00adper let\u00adters from a con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive crank, and the diaries of a nasty Vic\u00adto\u00adrian mag\u00adis\u00adtrate. The boy\u2019s nar\u00adra\u00adtive is writ\u00adten in pho\u00adnetic tran\u00adscrip\u00adtion of his dialect, which may cause trou\u00adble for a Cana\u00addian or Amer\u00adi\u00adcan read\u00ader. Jug\u00adgling these dis\u00adparate ele\u00adments is a dif\u00adfi\u00adcult task, and the author pulls it off beau\u00adti\u00adfully. The nov\u00adel has an obvi\u00adous mes\u00adsage: the strug\u00adgle against igno\u00adrance nev\u00ader ceas\u00ades.<span id=\"more-347\"> <\/span>I was delight\u00aded that a youth nov\u00adel like this draws atten\u00adtion to Snow, who is one of my per\u00adsonal heroes. The more atten\u00adtion is paid to <em>real\u00adly <\/em>impor\u00adtant his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal per\u00adson\u00adages like Snow, the more peo\u00adple will under\u00adstand the dif\u00adfer\u00adence between them and the assort\u00adment of gang\u00adsters, thugs, and con-men who are con\u00adven\u00adtionally rep\u00adre\u00adsented as \u201cgreat\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Swindells runs two sto\u00adries in par\u00adal\u00adlel.
