Fil\u00adip Marek<\/p><\/div>\n

Things did not get off to a good start. After a joy\u00adful reunion, Fil\u00adip and I walked up the hill of Are\u00adopa\u00adgus. It was a warm evening, and as we sat and talked on brink of the cliff where Ares, it is said, was tried by the Gods, and where Aeschy\u00adlus placed the action of The Emenides<\/em>, and while we talked, a stealthy hand seized Fil\u00adip\u2019s ruck\u00adsack. It con\u00adtained his pass\u00adport, cred\u00adit card, cam\u00adera, dri\u00adver\u2019s license, and cash. Quit apart from the finan\u00adcial blow, this put an end to our plan to rent a car in Irak\u00adlion and tour the archae\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal sites in com\u00adfort. We will be mak\u00ading do with bus\u00ades and hitch\u00ading, as best we can.<\/div>\n

After two days with\u00adout sleep, I was not in good shape for any fur\u00adther adven\u00adtures until I could get some snooz\u00ading time. But before I turned in, there was an hour\u2019s talk with the hostel\u2019s own\u00ader \u2014 about democ\u00adra\u00adcy, cor\u00adrup\u00adtion, and the sad state of affairs in mod\u00adern Greece. Tomor\u00adrow, we\u2019ll see the sights as best as we can before sail\u00ading the Crete.<\/p>\n
