In the late 1960\u2019s, there was a wave of \u201csky\u00adjack\u00adings\u201d \u2014 where lone gun\u00admen would force air\u00adplanes to fly to Cuba. This book was a con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary psychiatrist\u2019s attempt to ana\u00adlyze the moti\u00adva\u00adtions of the Sky\u00adjack\u00aders, based on inter\u00adviews with them in jail. In most cas\u00ades, Cuba sim\u00adply extra\u00addited them to Cana\u00adda, which then extra\u00addited them to the Unit\u00aded States. Even at the time, it was under\u00adstood by every\u00adone that the sky\u00adjack\u00adings were not ini\u00adti\u00adated by, or encour\u00adaged by the Cas\u00adtro regime, which was actu\u00adally rather embar\u00adrassed by the phe\u00adnom\u00ade\u00adnon. <\/span>The author rejects the idea that there was any seri\u00adous polit\u00adi\u00adcal moti\u00adva\u00adtion behind the sky\u00adjack\u00adings. In most cas\u00ades, the polit\u00adi\u00adcal procla\u00adma\u00adtions of the per\u00adpe\u00adtra\u00adtors were far too shal\u00adlow and sil\u00adly to be tak\u00aden seri\u00adously as motives. He goes through the per\u00adsonal his\u00adtory of each sky\u00adjacker and finds that they are remark\u00adably uni\u00adform. The typ\u00adi\u00adcal sky\u00adjacker was the child of a vio\u00adlent, bul\u00adly\u00ading father and a deeply reli\u00adgious moth\u00ader, who sub\u00adse\u00adquently failed mis\u00ader\u00adably in carv\u00ading out any kind of suc\u00adcess. They were usu\u00adally obses\u00adsively reli\u00adgious, and social\u00adly and psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcally extreme\u00adly con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive. Their sex\u00adual lives, most of the time, were pathet\u00adic. After some par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly dev\u00adast\u00ading fail\u00adure or betray\u00adal, they quite spon\u00adta\u00adneously con\u00adcocted a scheme to cre\u00adate a dra\u00admatic event that would some\u00adhow, they felt, resolve their dif\u00adfi\u00adcul\u00adties, at least in a sym\u00adbolic sense. The idea of the sky\u00adjack\u00adings seems to have occured to them sim\u00adply because oth\u00aders had done it, and it was a big thing in the news. The sim\u00adi\u00adlar\u00adity to the psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal pro\u00adfiles of ser\u00adial killers, dis\u00adcussed in Elliott Leyton\u2019s work, is strik\u00ading. Ley\u00adton would have had a more com\u00admon-sense approach to the case his\u00adto\u00adries. Hub\u00adbard used his data to con\u00adcoct a rather lame the\u00adory from the pseu\u00addo-sci\u00adence of psy\u00adchother\u00adapy which was then still very influ\u00aden\u00adtial. But the case his\u00adto\u00adries speak for them\u00adselves, and it\u2019s inter\u00adest\u00ading for a read\u00ader in 2006 to be remind\u00aded that air trav\u00adel was not par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly safe forty years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
