Two recent Cana\u00addi\u00adan movies about gay issues. One is a docu-dra\u00adma about the 2002 Char\u00adter of Rights court chal\u00adlenge made by Mark Hall, a high school stu\u00addent who was for\u00adbid\u00adden to take his male date to the prom at a Catholic school. On the whole, this is done with a light touch, treat\u00ading it as a roman\u00adtic com\u00ade\u00addy, rather than instruc\u00adtive melo\u00addra\u00adma. The court case was pret\u00adty much a for\u00adgone con\u00adclu\u00adsion (the Cana\u00addi\u00adan Char\u00adter of Rights is pret\u00adty damn clear on the mat\u00adter), and the boy\u2019s par\u00adents and school mates were on his side. The school author\u00adi\u00adties mere\u00adly looked fool\u00adish to everyone. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/span>Mam\u00adbo Ital\u00adiano<\/em><\/span>, is intend\u00aded as an off\u00adbeat com\u00ade\u00addy, but it has some gen\u00aduine\u00adly mov\u00ading dra\u00admat\u00adic scenes. It\u2019s done in a style rem\u00adi\u00adnis\u00adcent of the TV<\/span> show <\/span>Arrest\u00aded Devel\u00adop\u00adment, <\/em><\/span>mixed with a bit of <\/span>My Big Fat Greek Wed\u00adding. <\/em><\/span>Ange\u00adlo (Luke Kir\u00adby) has two prob\u00adlems. A small one: he\u2019s gay, in the clos\u00adet, and romanc\u00ading a cop. A big one: his fam\u00adi\u00adly is Ital\u00adian. Specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, his fam\u00adi\u00adly is part of that intense sub\u00adcul\u00adture of Mon\u00adtre\u00adal\u2019s <\/span>la petite Ital\u00adie. <\/em><\/span>(\u201cWhen I came to this coun\u00adtry, nobody told me there were two Amer\u00adi\u00adc\u00adas, the real one, Amer\u00adi\u00adca, and a fake one, Cana\u00adda. And then they did\u00adn\u2019t tell me there were two Canadas, the real one, Ontario, and the fake one, Que\u00adbec!\u201d). The Ital\u00adian-Cana\u00addi\u00adan com\u00ade\u00addy is paint\u00aded in broad, exag\u00adger\u00adat\u00aded strokes, but the whole sto\u00adry is done in such a way as to demon\u00adstrate the fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal absur\u00addi\u00adty of all the hero\u2019s prob\u00adlems. <\/a>With\u00adin the car\u00adtoon frame\u00adwork, there are many scenes that ring true. It\u2019s more about the stress of being a ping-pong ball among fam\u00adi\u00adly mem\u00adbers and com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty pres\u00adsures than about the prob\u00adlems of com\u00ading out. His cop boyfriend, believ\u00adably, caves in to fam\u00adi\u00adly pres\u00adsure and mar\u00adries a \u201cnice Ital\u00adian girl\u201d, an out\u00adcome made cer\u00adtain when you look back at his cow\u00adard\u00adly behav\u00adiour when he was in high school. There are moments in the film that are gen\u00aduine\u00adly hilar\u00adi\u00adous, not because of the absur\u00addist joke-style of the film, but because they are bit\u00adter reality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
