The old\u00adest known nota\u00adtion of music dates from the ancient Hur\u00adrian king\u00addom, in the sec\u00adond mil\u00adle\u00adnium <span class=\"caps\">BC<\/span>. Two sacred hymns recov\u00adered by archae\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgists from that ancient civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion, locat\u00aded in the heart of today\u2019s Kur\u00addis\u00adtan, are in the same mode and bear a vis\u00adi\u00adble kin\u00adship to the Kur\u00addish folk music of today. The mod\u00adern Kur\u00addish folk move\u00adment is frag\u00admented: vari\u00adant scenes in Iraqi Kur\u00addis\u00adtan, Iran, Syr\u00adia, or Turkey, as well as a Kur\u00addish dias\u00adpora in Europe and North Amer\u00adica. In Turkey, singing in the Kur\u00addish lan\u00adguage was against the law, pun\u00adished by impris\u00adon\u00adment and phys\u00adi\u00adcal abuse, until very recent\u00adly. In Iran, how\u00adever, it thrived, and in new\u00adly self-gov\u00adern\u00ading Kur\u00addis\u00adtan, I\u2019m sure it must be under\u00adgo\u00ading quite a renais\u00adsance.<span id=\"more-395\"> <\/span>Oth\u00ader than a few stray pieces on gen\u00aderal col\u00adlec\u00adtions of mid\u00addle east\u00adern music, the only record\u00adings I have are one by instru\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adists Tah\u00admoures and Sohrab Pour\u00adnaz\u00aderi, with accom\u00adpa\u00adny\u00ading vocals by Rojan, enti\u00adtled sim\u00adply <em>Kur\u00addish Folk Music<\/em>, and a cd called <em>Kur\u00addish Dances<\/em> fea\u00adtur\u00ading Moham\u00admad Bhamani on dozak and sorn\u00e2, \u2018Abdol\u00adl\u00e2h Nabi\u00adol\u00adl\u00e2hi on dobol, and vocals by \u2018Abdol\u00adl\u00e2h Qor\u00adb\u00e2ni. But I heard a mar\u00advelous live con\u00adcert last year, at the Agha Khan Muse\u00adum in Toron\u00adto.&nbsp;The first thing that strikes the lis\u00adtener is the music\u2019s acces\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adity. The melodies are catchy and upbeat, and not buried in the micro\u00adtonal intri\u00adc\u00adas\u00adies and <em>melis\u00adma <\/em>that makes it hard for out\u00adsiders to fol\u00adlow mid\u00addle east\u00adern music.
