A long time ago, I was a shep\u00adherd. I spent two and a half years work\u00ading var\u00adi\u00adous sheep farms.&nbsp;So I\u2019ll skip mak\u00ading the obvi\u00adous com\u00adments about this movie. The March\u00ading Morons, in their tens of mil\u00adlions, are no doubt up in arms about this \u201cgay west\u00adern\u201d. But there\u2019s no point in debat\u00ading with igno\u00adrant sav\u00adages, so I won\u2019t waste my time doing so. See the film. It\u2019s not a mas\u00adter\u00adpiece, but it\u2019s a well-craft\u00aded love sto\u00adry and char\u00adac\u00adter study with some superb act\u00ading.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?attachment_id=9687\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9687\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-9687\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/03\/06-03-02-VIEW-Ang-Lee-2005-Brokeback-Mountain-pic-2.jpg\" alt=\"06-03-02 VIEW (Ang Lee 2005) Brokeback Mountain pic 2\" width=\"208\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/03\/06-03-02-VIEW-Ang-Lee-2005-Brokeback-Mountain-pic-2.jpg 591w, http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/03\/06-03-02-VIEW-Ang-Lee-2005-Brokeback-Mountain-pic-2-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\"><\/a>&nbsp;Now, I wasn\u2019t par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly eager to see a sto\u00adry about true love mud\u00addled and thwart\u00aded by a dumb cul\u00adture. But Rodri\u00adgo Pri\u00adeto is a good cin\u00ade\u00admatog\u00adra\u00adpher, and I am home\u00adsick for moun\u00adtains. Well it didn\u2019t take me more than a few min\u00adutes to fig\u00adure out that it couldn\u2019t have been filmed in Wyoming, where the sto\u00adry is set. A few of the estab\u00adlish\u00ading shots were of the Tetons, but most of the time the moun\u00adtains looked all wrong. Those huge diag\u00ado\u00adnal slabs with caste\u00adlate peaks, and unbro\u00adken mass\u00ades of dou\u00adglas fir and spruce sweep\u00ading down into crys\u00adtalline lakes in deep intra\u00admon\u00adtane trench\u00ades \u2014 well, that\u2019s Cana\u00addian Rock\u00adies [see pho\u00adto above]. Wyoming moun\u00adtains have a dif\u00adfer\u00adent&nbsp;look.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9688\" style=\"width: 373px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?attachment_id=9688\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9688\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9688\" class=\"wp-image-9688\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/03\/06-03-02-VIEW-Ang-Lee-2005-Brokeback-Mountain-pic-3.jpg\" alt=\"06-03-02 VIEW (Ang Lee 2005) Brokeback Mountain pic 3\" width=\"363\" height=\"243\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The bane of film authen\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adty: inac\u00adcu\u00adrate&nbsp;sheep.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The sheep. Well, there was some stuff that was right. The old Euskalduna with a beret is some\u00adthing you would have seen in that time and place. Some of the work the main char\u00adac\u00adters where shown doing was cor\u00adrect. But all the sheep were fresh\u00adly shorn and marked, and they were <em>still <\/em>fresh\u00adly shorn and marked after they had sup\u00adpos\u00adedly been pas\u00adtur\u00ading up in the moun\u00adtains for months! There wasn\u2019t a din\u00adgle\u00adberry in sight. The main char\u00adac\u00adters where not shown inter\u00adact\u00ading with the dogs, which were nowhere to be seen, most of the time.
