There is far more going on in Satya\u00adjit Ray\u2019s bril\u00adliant direc\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal debut than the mere record\u00ading of life.&nbsp;Con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00ading that he was a novice film-mak\u00ader, the tech\u00adni\u00adcal crew and actors were ama\u00adteurs, and bud\u00adget was 150,000 rupees (in 1955, less than a san\u00addal-strap bud\u00adget), Ray was able to cre\u00adate scenes of aston\u00adish\u00ading lyri\u00adcism and inten\u00adsi\u00adty. Among them are that were the two chil\u00addren, Apu and Dur\u00adga, chase through a field to see a pass\u00ading train; where Apu watch\u00ades, won\u00adder-eyed, a vil\u00adlage<em> jatra<\/em> play; and the home\u00adcom\u00ading of the father, who learns that his daugh\u00adter has died. The film was based on the auto\u00adbi\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal nov\u00adel by Bib\u00adhutib\u00adhushan Bandy\u00adopad\u00adhyay, who lived the intense pover\u00adty that he wrote of, and knew that the bot\u00adtom of the social scale con\u00adtains as many Ham\u00adlets and Andro\u00admach\u00ades as does the top. Every\u00adthing about this film is hon\u00adest, and the bril\u00adliant score by Ravi Shankar gives it addi\u00adtion\u00adal depth.&nbsp;Ray went on to film two sequels. The three films are now known as the<em> Apu Tril\u00ado\u00adgy<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 <em>Pather Pan\u00adchali<\/em> (1955); <em>Apara\u00adji\u00adto<\/em> [The Unvanquished](1956) and <em>Apur Sansar<\/em> [The World of Apu](1959).
