{"id":498,"date":"2006-10-27T03:35:40","date_gmt":"2006-10-27T07:35:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/s265039441.onlinehome.us\/philpaine\/?p=498"},"modified":"2018-08-20T17:51:27","modified_gmt":"2018-08-20T21:51:27","slug":"friday-october27-2006-tread-softly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?p=498","title":{"rendered":"Friday, October27, 2006 \u2014 Tread Softly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I\u2019ve nev\u00ader been a big fan of William But\u00adler Yeats \u2014 from that peri\u00adod, Ger\u00adard Man\u00adley Hop\u00adkins is more to my taste \u2014 but this short poem pleas\u00ades me.&nbsp;If you have ever been qui\u00adet\u00adly, unselfish\u00adly and vul\u00adner\u00ada\u00adbly in love with anoth\u00ader per\u00adson, you will know that he has cap\u00adtured the sen\u00adsa\u00adtion exactly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em>He wish\u00ades for the cloths of heaven<\/em><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em> Had I the heav\u00adens\u2019 embroi\u00addered cloths,<\/em><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em> Enwrought with gold\u00aden and sil\u00adver&nbsp;light,<\/em><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em> The blue and the dim and the dark cloths<\/em><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em> Of night and light and the half-light,<\/em><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em> I would spread the cloths under your&nbsp;feet:<\/em><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em> But I, being poor, have only my dreams;<\/em><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em> I have spread my dreams under your&nbsp;feet;<\/em><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <em> Tread soft\u00adly, because you tread on my dreams.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No tedious cycles of his\u00adto\u00adry, slough\u00ading beasts, or celtic blar\u00adney, here.&nbsp;Appar\u00adent\u00adly, Yeats occa\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly stepped off the cos\u00admic mer\u00adry-go-round to feel some\u00adthing in an ordi\u00adnary way.&nbsp;Love is not a top\u00adic that poets of the twen\u00adti\u00adeth cen\u00adtu\u00adry han\u00addled well.&nbsp;Too plebian, I guess.&nbsp;And it takes courage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[Adden\u00addum:&nbsp;A read\u00ader informs me that Yeat\u2019s poem is actu\u00adally reli\u00adgious in nature, and not about love at all. He explained the ref\u00ader\u00adences in the phras\u00ading that iden\u00adtify it as actu\u00adally being about con\u00adtri\u00adtion, repen\u00adtance and \u201chid\u00adden evil\u201d. *sigh* Why are poets attract\u00aded to such tedious non\u00adsense?
