{"id":5016,"date":"2013-06-13T23:54:22","date_gmt":"2013-06-14T03:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?p=5016"},"modified":"2026-01-27T23:50:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T04:50:12","slug":"bombay-bicycle-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?p=5016","title":{"rendered":"Bombay Bicycle Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Bombay-Bycicle-Club.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5017 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Bombay-Bycicle-Club.jpg\" alt=\"Bombay Bycicle Club\" width=\"443\" height=\"296\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first I heard of Bom\u00adbay Bicy\u00adcle Club was the song \u201cHow Can You Swal\u00adlow So Much Sleep?\u201d from their third album <i>A Dif\u00adfer\u00adent Kind of Fix<\/i> (2011), which got some play here in Cana\u00adda.&nbsp;But oth\u00ader songs I heard, from an ear\u00adli\u00ader album, didn\u2019t sound very sim\u00adi\u00adlar, and I didn\u2019t con\u00adnect them in my head until, search\u00ading for the <span class=\"caps\">EP<\/span> ver\u00adsion of \u201cHow Can You\u2026\u201d, I acquired all three of their albums.&nbsp;We are in an age in which musi\u00adcians are much less trib\u00adal than they used to be.&nbsp;The bands that make the strongest impres\u00adsion today tend to be eclec\u00adtic, draw\u00ading on many sources for their style, and chang\u00ading their style as the mood suits them.&nbsp;They can\u00adnot eas\u00adi\u00adly be clas\u00adsi\u00adfied.&nbsp;This Lon\u00addon band exem\u00adpli\u00adfies the trend.&nbsp;<i>A Dif\u00adfer\u00adent Kind of Fix<\/i> is <!--more-->elec\u00adtro-pop, with a thick, lay\u00adered sound, while <i>Flaws<\/i> (2010) is most\u00adly acoustic stuff that sounds rough and impromp\u00adtu, is clear\u00adly folk-inspired, and would play well to an audi\u00adence of Joni Mitchell fans.&nbsp;Their debut album, <i>I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose<\/i> (2009), was more or less con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal Indie-rock in form, but already showed a very high lev\u00adel of musi\u00adcian\u00adship.&nbsp;\u201cEvening\/Morning\u201d, \u201cAlways Like This\u201d, and \u201cDust on the Ground\u201d are songs that stand out on this first album, which has come to be my favourite of the three, as it has a mood and style that reminds me of ear\u00adly Kinks mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal, and this suits my tem\u00adpera\u00adment more than the lush sound of the third album.
