To remain cul\u00adtur\u00adal\u00adly rel\u00ade\u00advant for sev\u00aden\u00adty-six years is a rare accom\u00adplish\u00adment for any writer. Fred\u00aderik Pohl\u2019s career as a pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal writer began in 1937, and end\u00aded this last Mon\u00adday with his death. His last pub\u00adlished nov\u00adel was in 2011, and he was work\u00ading on a sec\u00adond vol\u00adume of auto\u00adbi\u00adog\u00adra\u00adphy when he died. His blog, The Way the Future Blogs<\/i>, was one of my favourites on the web in recent years \u2014 and his sto\u00adries and nov\u00adels were among my favourites when I was grow\u00ading up. He found new read\u00aders with each decade of his long career. His influ\u00adence as an edi\u00adtor was equal\u00adly sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant. The field of Sci\u00adence Fic\u00adtion owes much to him, though he was nev\u00ader a flashy atten\u00adtion-get\u00adter, nev\u00ader the sub\u00adject of a per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty cult. At SF<\/span> con\u00adven\u00adtions, he remained just a fan<\/em>, some\u00adone to chat with ami\u00adably at a par\u00adty, who did not care whether you were a big shot or a pim\u00adply teenag\u00ader. I can vouch for that from per\u00adson\u00adal expe\u00adri\u00adence. Ascer\u00adbic wit co-exist\u00aded with gen\u00adtle\u00adness and human\u00adi\u00adty in his demeanor. He was, as they used to say on the stage, \u201ca class act.\u201d<\/p>\n
