Bechet (1897\u20131959) played many instru\u00adments, but was best known on sopra\u00adno sax, clar\u00adinet, and cor\u00adnet. He was a prodi\u00adgy, dis\u00adcov\u00adered at the age of eight by Fred\u00addy Kep\u00adpard, and employed in Keppard\u2019s band at eleven. Great\u00adly admired as a high\u00adly cre\u00adative and indi\u00advid\u00adual per\u00adformer by oth\u00ader jazzmen (notably Duke Elling\u00adton), Bechet was a cul\u00adtured and poet\u00adic man, who divid\u00aded his time between Europe and Amer\u00adica, and after <span class=\"caps\">WW2<\/span>, mar\u00adried and end\u00aded his days in France. It\u2019s said that he was the mod\u00adel for the char\u00adac\u00adter \u201cPablo\u201d in Her\u00admann Hesse\u2019s <em>Step\u00adpen\u00adwolf<\/em>. This is quite pos\u00adsi\u00adble. In 1929, he appeared with his own band at the Haus Vater\u00adland caf\u00e9 in Berlin, where Hesse could eas\u00adily have seen him. Some of the cuts on this disk fea\u00adture Lionel Hamp\u00adton, and Bechet\u2019s pow\u00ader\u00adful vibra\u00adto is deli\u00adciously echoed by his vibes.
