Charles and David Koch are the mul\u00adti-mul\u00adti-bil\u00adlion\u00adaires who cur\u00adrent\u00adly exer\u00adcise strate\u00adgic con\u00adtrol over the Repub\u00adli\u00adcan Par\u00adty in the Unit\u00aded States, and, through a vast, labyrinthine net\u00adwork of foun\u00adda\u00adtions and dum\u00admy cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtions (known to jour\u00adnal\u00adists as the \u201cKochto\u00adpus\u201d), con\u00adtrol the Tea Par\u00adty move\u00adment, most of the key Con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive think tanks, and the pho\u00adny \u201cLib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan\u201d move\u00adment. Cana\u00addi\u00adans have as much to fear from the Koch broth\u00aders as Amer\u00adi\u00adcans do. They have long been the prin\u00adci\u00adpal con\u00adsumers of Cana\u00addi\u00adan \u201cdirty oil.\u201d Their Pine Bend, Min\u00adneso\u00adta facil\u00adi\u00adties pipe it in to pro\u00adduce pet\u00adcoke, a nasty pol\u00adluter that is ille\u00adgal in the Unit\u00aded States, then sell it to the Com\u00admu\u00adnist Par\u00adty in Bei\u00adjing. They have qui\u00adet\u00adly acquired leas\u00ades for 1.1 mil\u00adlion acres of Alber\u00adta oil fields and have near\u00adly dou\u00adble the direct hold\u00adings that Exxon\u00adMo\u00adbil has. In May, Koch Oil Sands Oper\u00ada\u00adtion of Cal\u00adgary sought per\u00admits to embark on a mul\u00adti-bil\u00adlion\u00ad-dol\u00adlar tar sands extrac\u00adtion oper\u00ada\u00adtion. Alber\u00adta tar sands projects are tied to the Com\u00admu\u00adnist Par\u00adty in Bei\u00adjing through chan\u00adnels oth\u00ader than the Koch empire. The state oil com\u00adpa\u00adny, PetroChi\u00adna, bought out 60% of the assets of the Athabas\u00adka Oil Cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtion, a hold\u00ading com\u00adpa\u00adny that does no explo\u00adration or drilling, and is the oth\u00ader major lease\u00adhold\u00ader in the Athabas\u00adka region where the Kochs hold most of their leas\u00ades. But the intri\u00adcate financ\u00ading comes from the same sources for both: Gold\u00adman Sachs, with whom the Kochs are close\u00adly tied, acts as the joint-leader and book run\u00adner for the PetroChi\u00adna deal. [2] Canada\u2019s Con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive gov\u00adern\u00adment has suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly rammed through its FIPA<\/span> treaty with Bei\u00adjing, which gives the Com\u00admu\u00adnist Par\u00adty the pow\u00ader to over\u00adride leg\u00adis\u00adla\u00adtion by Canada\u2019s Par\u00adlia\u00adment for the next 31 years. [3] The Kochs are well-placed to prof\u00adit from the com\u00adple\u00adtion of the Key\u00adstone pipeline. Iron\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, the Kochs ben\u00ade\u00adfit the most from the uncer\u00adtain\u00adty cre\u00adat\u00aded by the Oba\u00adma administration\u2019s delays and inde\u00adci\u00adsion regard\u00ading the pipeline. [4] It\u2019s prob\u00ada\u00adbly not true, as many think, that the Cana\u00addi\u00adan oil is ulti\u00admate\u00adly head\u00aded for Chi\u00adna. But Bei\u00adjing\u2019s Com\u00admu\u00adnist aris\u00adtoc\u00adra\u00adcy will be prof\u00adit\u00ading hand\u00adsome\u00adly at sev\u00ader\u00adal stages, and Cana\u00addi\u00adan tar sand oil will dis\u00adplace oth\u00ader Amer\u00adi\u00adcan imports, which will then be avail\u00adable for oth\u00ader mar\u00adkets, in a game of check\u00ader-jumps which ulti\u00admate\u00adly ends up with a rich\u00ader Com\u00admu\u00adnist Par\u00adty, and poor\u00ader Cana\u00addi\u00adans and Americans.

The vast for\u00adtune that the Koch broth\u00aders inher\u00adit\u00aded was built up pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly through polit\u00adi\u00adcal pow\u00ader, not entre\u00adpre\u00adneur\u00adship in any \u201cfree mar\u00adket\u201d. The Koch broth\u00aders no more believe in, or want free mar\u00adkets or com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion than any bil\u00adlion\u00adaires ever have. Their father, Fred Koch, was no Hor\u00ada\u00adtio Alger, hav\u00ading inher\u00adit\u00aded his<\/em> for\u00adtune from his father, a Texas rail\u00adway and press baron. He expand\u00aded it by<\/span> steal\u00ading a new refin\u00ading process from its inven\u00adtors and using gov\u00adern\u00adment con\u00adnec\u00adtions to out\u00adflank the orig\u00adi\u00adnal inven\u00adtors and oth\u00ader com\u00adpeti\u00adtors. Then he sold the tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy to Joseph Stal\u00adin. Between <\/span>1929 and 1931, he built 15 crack\u00ading units for the Sovi\u00adet Empire. [5] Today\u2019s Koch fam\u00adi\u00adly con\u00adtin\u00adues the tra\u00addi\u00adtion of hered\u00adi\u00adtary aris\u00adto\u00adcrat\u00adic wealth pro\u00adtect\u00aded and ampli\u00adfied by gov\u00adern\u00adment pow\u00ader and occa\u00adsion\u00adal recourse to trea\u00adson. Dur\u00ading the 2000\u2019s, while friend and Koch boo\u00addle-col\u00adlec\u00adtor George W. Bush, Jr. was hand\u00ading them plum after plum of dereg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion, they made great sums of mon\u00adey sell\u00ading tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy to the Aya\u00adtol\u00adlahs of Iran, cir\u00adcum\u00advent\u00ading U.S. sanc\u00adtions through their for\u00adeign sub\u00adsidiaries. The Kochs were not only deeply involved in the stock swin\u00addles that led up to the mar\u00adket crash of the 2008, they have bought them\u00adselves effec\u00adtive immu\u00adnity from pros\u00ade\u00adcu\u00adtion, and indeed from any present or future reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion. [6] They are present\u00adly engag\u00ading in an accel\u00ader\u00adated ver\u00adsion of the same kind of swin\u00addles on the com\u00admod\u00adity mar\u00adket, posi\u00adtion\u00ading them\u00adselves to walk away rich\u00ader from the next mar\u00adket crash.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Koch broth\u00aders are pret\u00adty clear\u00adly clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adable as mem\u00adbers of the genus Homo oli\u00adgarchi\u00adcus<\/em>, which has inhab\u00adited eco\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal nich\u00ades in every cor\u00adrupt, hier\u00adar\u00adchi\u00adcal social struc\u00adture from Ancient Egypt to the KGB<\/span> and the Davos crowd. Most oli\u00adgarchs like to keep a low pro\u00adfile, and let ide\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal manip\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions be han\u00addled by under\u00adlings. The Koch broth\u00aders, how\u00adev\u00ader, like to be seen and heard, espe\u00adcially as dis\u00adpensers of ide\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal snake-oil. While most of the world\u2019s multi\u00adbil\u00adlion\u00adaires buy their politi\u00adcians qui\u00adetly in back rooms, the Koch\u2019s have been unusu\u00adal in the degree to which they\u2019ve made them\u00adselves open, tri\u00adumphant cru\u00adsaders for graft. Graft is their religion. <\/span><\/p>\n

As ide\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal (rather than finan\u00adcial) empire builders, they have accu\u00admu\u00adlated an army of pli\u00adable, obe\u00addi\u00adent suck\u00aders, in every venue from prep\u00adpy uni\u00adver\u00adsity cam\u00adpuses to Appalachi\u00adan trail\u00ader parks. They long ago learned from the Com\u00admu\u00adnists and Fas\u00adcists that you can tai\u00adlor a move\u00adment to dif\u00adfer\u00adent groups of suck\u00aders simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adously, with\u00adout wor\u00adry\u00ading about its con\u00adtra\u00addic\u00adtions or incon\u00adsis\u00adten\u00adcies. Each group only lis\u00adtens to what you tell them<\/em>, and each group does what you tell them to do, regard\u00adless of obvi\u00adous con\u00adtra\u00addic\u00adtions. The Tea Par\u00adty nitwits march along hap\u00adpily with smug \u201cLib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adans\u201d, Belt\u00adway hacks, and suck\u00aders serv\u00ading cor\u00adpo\u00adrate agents of Bei\u00adjing and Riyadh, toward what\u00adever cliff the Kochs want them to jump off.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kochs began by join\u00ading and financ\u00ading the noto\u00adri\u00adous, ultra-racist John Birch Soci\u00adety. Their father was one of the founders of the sup\u00adpos\u00adedly \u201canti-Com\u00admu\u00adnist\u201d Birchers, while simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adously mak\u00ading a for\u00adtune work\u00ading with Stal\u00adin. But the Birchers\u2019 main thrust became oppo\u00adsi\u00adtion to Civ\u00adil Rights, and an evolv\u00ading Amer\u00adi\u00adcan soci\u00adety came to see them as a rel\u00adic from the past. Lead\u00ading Con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals, embar\u00adrassed by them, moved active\u00adly to dump the group. The Repub\u00adli\u00adcan \u201cSouth\u00adern Strat\u00ade\u00adgy\u201d of absorb\u00ading the seg\u00adre\u00adga\u00adtion\u00adists and racists of the South by play\u00ading up to their fears had paid off. Repub\u00adli\u00adcans dis\u00adplaced the Democ\u00adrats from their long pre\u00addom\u00adi\u00adnance. But the plan in that era was to shift the focus to reli\u00adgion, sex and war-mon\u00adger\u00ading as \u201cpop\u00adulist\u201d ral\u00adly\u00ading calls, with racism swept under the car\u00adpet. Repub\u00adli\u00adcans repu\u00addi\u00adat\u00aded both the Klu Klux Klan and the Birchers. The Birchers were now use\u00adless to the Kochs, so they were dropped.

Next, the Kochs fixed their eyes on the nascent Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adian move\u00adment, which at first includ\u00aded at least a few peo\u00adple who gen\u00aduinely want\u00aded to cre\u00adate an intel\u00adlec\u00adtual foun\u00adda\u00adtion for lib\u00aderty. But there was no group of poten\u00adtial suck\u00aders more like\u00adly to be bought for hard cash than the extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnar\u00adily na\u00efve and eas\u00adily con\u00adfused Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adans. The only groups that the Kochs would have found eas\u00adier to manip\u00adu\u00adlate would have been col\u00adlege stu\u00addent Maoists or the dopes who walk into Sci\u00aden\u00adtol\u00adogy ses\u00adsions. The move\u00adment was, in point of fact, begin\u00adning to fill up with old Com\u00admu\u00adnists. In short order, the Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adian move\u00adment was in their pock\u00adet, and David Koch became the Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adian Party\u2019s vice-pres\u00adi\u00adden\u00adtial can\u00addi\u00addate. Mil\u00adlions of Koch $$$ poured into Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adian groups on cam\u00adpuses, and into var\u00adi\u00adous think tanks and jour\u00adnals. Soon these \u201clib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adans\u201d were busy pro\u00admot\u00ading unlim\u00adited spend\u00ading of tax\u00adpay\u00aders\u2019 mon\u00adey on mil\u00adi\u00adtary-indus\u00adtri\u00adal spongers, inher\u00adi\u00adtance laws encour\u00adag\u00ading hered\u00adi\u00adtary aris\u00adtoc\u00adracy, and the most col\u00adlec\u00adtivist<\/em> of all con\u00adcepts, the notion that a cor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adtion is a \u201cper\u00adson.\u201d Mean\u00adwhile, what\u00adever vague dif\u00adfer\u00adence there had been between the Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adian move\u00adment and Con\u00adser\u00advatism sim\u00adply van\u00adished. No Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan I sub\u00adse\u00adquent\u00adly met ever active\u00adly did any\u00adthing that did\u00adn\u2019t fall into line with Con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive strate\u00adgies, no mat\u00adter how much they talked about being dis\u00adtinct. It was at this point that I ceased to regard Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan\u00adism as a legit\u00adi\u00admate intel\u00adlec\u00adtual move\u00adment on any lev\u00adel, and rec\u00adog\u00adnized it whol\u00adly and unequiv\u00ado\u00adcally for what it is<\/em>, an elite-direct\u00aded con game manip\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading dim-wit\u00adted suck\u00aders. Before that, I had some sym\u00adpa\u00adthy for the move\u00adment. After\u00adwards, not a shred.

But Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adans are most\u00adly nerdy techies, many of them athe\u00adists, the kind of peo\u00adple who used to flock to Tech\u00adnoc\u00adracy or Marx\u00adism. They imag\u00adine that soci\u00adety can be re-engi\u00adneered with the appli\u00adca\u00adtion of a few slo\u00adgans, crack-pot eco\u00adnomic gib\u00adber\u00adish, and a pair of pli\u00aders. Most Amer\u00adi\u00adcans, who are fright\u00adened by both athe\u00adism and sci\u00adence, would nev\u00ader look to them for guid\u00adance. Their polit\u00adi\u00adcal activism could nev\u00ader have a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant impact on Amer\u00adi\u00adcan pol\u00adi\u00adtics, which is locked into two tra\u00addi\u00adtional par\u00adties and a vast sys\u00adtem of cor\u00adrup\u00adtion, or on Amer\u00adi\u00adcan soci\u00adety, which is a web of reli\u00adgious, racial, region\u00adal, sex\u00adual and occu\u00adpa\u00adtional rival\u00adries. Frankly, Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adans are not smart enough to be use\u00adful strate\u00adgi\u00adcally, but not dumb enough to be reli\u00adable canon fod\u00adder. Their only reli\u00adable activ\u00adi\u00adties turned out to be end\u00adlessly repeat\u00ading their own slo\u00adgans on the inter\u00adnet and eat\u00ading microwave burritos.<\/span><\/p>\n

So the Lib\u00ader\u00adtar\u00adian move\u00adment was put on the side\u00adlines, and the Kochs con\u00adcen\u00adtrated on gain\u00ading con\u00adtrol of the Repub\u00adli\u00adcan Par\u00adty. To do that, they need\u00aded a mole. You take over a large orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion by cre\u00adat\u00ading a small orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion embed\u00added in it, but not sub\u00adject to its author\u00adity. You then recruit as many suck\u00aders as you can \u2014 specif\u00adi\u00adcally those who could nev\u00ader have been able to rise in the big\u00adger orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion \u2014 and set them to erod\u00ading the pow\u00ader of the tra\u00addi\u00adtional lead\u00ader\u00adship from the inside. You stage events and push issues that the main orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion would nor\u00admally shy away from, but can\u2019t actu\u00adally dis\u00adown. These are basic tech\u00adniques per\u00adfected by the Com\u00admu\u00adnists, and used to infil\u00adtrate many orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions and social move\u00adments when they<\/em> were the going con\u00adcern. The pow\u00ader and cred\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adity of the big\u00adger orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion will erode. In the case of the Repub\u00adli\u00adcan Par\u00adty, this means los\u00ading elec\u00adtions. But the Kochs aren\u2019t inter\u00adested in the polit\u00adi\u00adcal sur\u00advival of Repub\u00adli\u00adcan politi\u00adcians, they\u2019re inter\u00adested in hav\u00ading a con\u00adtrolled orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion that will advance their per\u00adsonal agen\u00adda, which it can do in or out of office. Thus, the Tea Par\u00adty was born, trum\u00adpeted as a spon\u00adta\u00adneously gen\u00ader\u00adated \u201cgrass-roots\u201d move\u00adment, but actu\u00adally dis\u00adcussed and out\u00adlined by the Kochs decades before it appeared.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every\u00adthing depends on there being plen\u00adty of suck\u00aders. Suck\u00aders at every lev\u00adel. Suck\u00aders in the unem\u00adploy\u00adment lines who will vote for the peo\u00adple who threw them out of work, because they were told black wel\u00adfare-recip\u00adi\u00adents were respon\u00adsi\u00adble. Suck\u00aders run\u00adning small busi\u00adnesses who imag\u00adine that poli\u00adcies aimed at pro\u00adtect\u00ading Exxon\u00adMo\u00adbil are going to help their five-employ\u00adee muf\u00adfler shop. Suck\u00aders tak\u00ading busi\u00adness cours\u00ades in com\u00admu\u00adnity col\u00adleges who have been taught by bored teach\u00aders that the \u201cmar\u00adket\u201d is a self-reg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading mech\u00ada\u00adnism gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading pros\u00adper\u00adity. Suck\u00aders read\u00ading Atlas Shrugged<\/em> on a park bench and day\u00addream\u00ading of being Super\u00adDoop\u00ader\u00admen. Suck\u00aders who think that the Rap\u00adture is com\u00ading next Wednes\u00adday at 4 P.M., Rocky Moun\u00adtain Time. Suck\u00aders who live in the fan\u00adtasy uni\u00adverse cre\u00adated by Fox Prav\u00adda. Suck\u00aders who want to see the Con\u00adfed\u00ader\u00ada\u00adcy rise again and re-estab\u00adlish slav\u00adery. Suck\u00aders who are ter\u00adri\u00adfied when they see immi\u00adgrant chil\u00addren. Lots and lots and lots and lots of suck\u00aders, with dif\u00adfer\u00adent dreams, dif\u00adfer\u00adent atti\u00adtudes, dif\u00adfer\u00adent fears, but unit\u00aded in their gullibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Koch broth\u00aders are not the only bil\u00adlion\u00adaires to be wor\u00adried about. All their kin are out to destroy our free\u00addom. All of them want a world of peas\u00adants, serfs and slaves ruled over by a tiny aris\u00adtoc\u00adracy of inher\u00adited wealth. But by enjoy\u00ading the lime\u00adlight, and mak\u00ading them\u00adselves pub\u00adlic ped\u00addlers of ide\u00adol\u00adogy, the Kochs actu\u00adally help<\/em> us to under\u00adstand what we should be fight\u00ading against. Most of the big mon\u00adey pow\u00ader is invis\u00adi\u00adble and un-map\u00adpable. It\u2019s nice to have some<\/em> vil\u00adlains who actu\u00adal\u00adly twid\u00addle their mus\u00adtach\u00ades and sneer at us. <\/span>If there were no Koch broth\u00aders obvi\u00adously<\/em> try\u00ading to buy polit\u00adi\u00adcal pow\u00ader and enslave us, we would have con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adably more trou\u00adble get\u00adting peo\u00adple to under\u00adstand why the sub\u00adurbs of Dal\u00adlas and Den\u00adver and Des Moines are fill\u00ading up with pen\u00adni\u00adless fam\u00adi\u00adlies work\u00ading two full-time jobs, but rely\u00ading on food stamps to feed their kids.
