Long known in abo\u00adrig\u00adi\u00adnal music cir\u00adcles, she deserves to break out into the glob\u00adal music scene. Her music is orig\u00adi\u00adnal, refined, and intel\u00adli\u00adgent. I pos\u00adsess three of her four albums, <em>Dirty Riv\u00ader <\/em>(1994), <em>Riel\u2019s Road<\/em> (2000), and <em>Ket\u00adwam <\/em>(2002). I have yet to hear all of this year\u2019s release, <em>Nikawiy Askiy<\/em>, but I\u2019ve heard three songs from it, and they clear\u00adly indi\u00adcate that her musi\u00adcal evo\u00adlu\u00adtion is con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00ading with\u00adout hin\u00addrance. <em>Riel\u2019s Road<\/em> is prob\u00ada\u00adbly the best intro\u00adduc\u00adtion to her work, open\u00ading with the stun\u00adning \u201cBeat the Drum (Gath\u00ader\u00ading Song)\u201d, and going on to explore emo\u00adtion\u00adally the after\u00admath and con\u00adse\u00adquences of the most dra\u00admatic events in post-Con\u00adfed\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion Canada\u2019s his\u00adtory, the M\u00e9tis upris\u00ading and death of Louis Riel. How\u00adever, most of the songs on this album have a folk-jazz feel\u00ading. On <em>Ket\u00adwam<\/em>, which focus\u00ades on much more tra\u00addi\u00adtional abo\u00adrig\u00adi\u00adnal-m\u00e9tis mate\u00adr\u00adial, she col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adrates with the vocal trio Nit\u00adsi\u00adwakun, of which she is one mem\u00adber (the oth\u00ader two are Lisa Saza\u00adma and Shak\u00adti Hayes), with fid\u00addle Daniel Lapp, and with vocal\u00adist Win\u00adston Wut\u00adtunee. The Cree-lan\u00adguage songs are the most pow\u00ader\u00adful. The album is tru\u00adly col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtive.
