He is one of those fig\u00adures that steps out of a genre. Peo\u00adple who hard\u00adly ever lis\u00adten to jazz know Louis Arm\u00adstrong, peo\u00adple who hard\u00adly ever lis\u00adten to opera know Pavarot\u00adti, who suc\u00adcess\u00adfully stepped into the shoes of Caru\u00adso as the ambas\u00adsador of opera to the broad pub\u00adlic. He ful\u00adfilled the role bril\u00adliantly, using his com\u00adi\u00adcal, un-threat\u00aden\u00ading appear\u00adance to advan\u00adtage. It was as if your favourite jol\u00adly uncle had super-pow\u00aders, which he only used after din\u00adner.&nbsp;On hear\u00ading of his death, I played his won\u00adder\u00adful duet with James Brown, and his rather pecu\u00adliar one with Lou Reed. Then I went through <em>Pavarotti\u2019s Great\u00adest Hits<\/em>, with his famed arias from <em>Rigo\u00adletto<\/em> and <em>L\u2019\u00e9lisir d\u2019Amore<\/em>, among oth\u00aders. Then I played his album of Neapoli\u00adtan folk songs, <em>O Sole Mio<\/em>, and his album of Christ\u00admas car\u00adols, <em>O Holy Night<\/em>.
