I read Cord\u00adwainer Smith when\u00adever I want to be remind\u00aded of what Sci\u00adence Fic\u00adtion once was: a field in which intel\u00adlect, imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion, and artis\u00adtic integri\u00adty com\u00adbined to tran\u00adscend the lim\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtions of con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary cul\u00adture. Nobody was bet\u00adter equipped to think uncon\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adally than was \u201cCord\u00adwainer Smith\u201d, who was real\u00adly Paul Myron Antho\u00adny Linebarg\u00ader. Amer\u00adi\u00adcan born, but raised in Chi\u00adna (where he was known as \u6797\u767d\u697d [Lin Bai-lo] ), France and Ger\u00admany, Linebarg\u00ader was at var\u00adi\u00adous times a spy, expert in psy\u00adcho\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal war\u00adfare, aca\u00add\u00ade\u00admic, and advis\u00ader to the White House on Asian affairs (though refus\u00ading to be involved in the Viet\u00adnam War). He was, odd as it seems, Sun Yat-sen\u2019s god\u00adson, and nego\u00adti\u00adated inter\u00adna\u00adtional treaties when he was teenag\u00ader. Yet his iden\u00adtity remained a secret to the sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion com\u00admu\u00adnity when his sto\u00adries appeared in the magazines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The sto\u00adries he wrote were far in advance of their time. In 1945, these words appeared at the begin\u00adning of \u201cScan\u00adners Live In Vain\u201d:<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>&nbsp;<em>Mar\u00adtel was angry. He did not even adjust his blood away from&nbsp;anger.&nbsp;<\/em><\/em><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was the begin\u00adning of a series of sto\u00adries, linked into a com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive \u201cfuture his\u00adtory\u201d which explored genet\u00adic engi\u00adneer\u00ading, arti\u00adfi\u00adcial intel\u00adli\u00adgence, organ har\u00advest\u00ading, human-machine syn\u00adthe\u00adsis, and many oth\u00ader out\u00adr\u00e9 con\u00adcepts, long before they were \u201cnor\u00admal\u00adized\u201d into the sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion tool-kit. His prose style was pre\u00adcise, con\u00adtrolled, and sophis\u00adti\u00adcated.
