<\/a><\/a><\/span><\/span>If you\u2019re look\u00ading for a good Hitch\u00adcock film that isn\u2019t con\u00adstant\u00adly screened, then check out this 1953 item which failed at the box-office, but con\u00adtains all the ele\u00adments of clas\u00adsic Hitch\u00adcock. Mont\u00adgomery Clift gives one of his typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly tense and repressed per\u00adfor\u00admances as a priest false\u00adly accused of a mur\u00adder. The set\u00adting, Que\u00adbec City in the ear\u00adly 1950\u2019s, is rep\u00adre\u00adsent\u00aded with more real\u00adism than Hol\u00adly\u00adwood usu\u00adal\u00adly man\u00adaged with such \u201cexot\u00adic\u201d locales at that time. The main hook, that the priest can\u2019t clear him\u00adself because the real mur\u00adder\u00ader has con\u00adfessed to him under the \u201cseal of the con\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adal\u201d, might be a stum\u00adbling block for today\u2019s audi\u00adence, but giv\u00aden that under\u00adstand\u00ading, the plot works out log\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly. The hero\u00adine, played by Anne Bax\u00adter, comes across as a thor\u00adough\u00adly dis\u00adlik\u00adable per\u00adson, which may have been the main rea\u00adson the film failed with the pub\u00adlic. By the end of the first reel, I was hop\u00ading that she would turn out to be the real mur\u00adder\u00ader. Karl Malden gives an odd per\u00adfor\u00admance, obvi\u00adous\u00adly uncer\u00adtain how to rep\u00adre\u00adsent a French Cana\u00addi\u00adan police detec\u00adtive, and uncom\u00adfort\u00adable with his stilt\u00aded dialog.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
