How\u00adever, the motet form trans\u00adforms the feel\u00ading of the trou\u00adv\u00e8re songs. They lose their inti\u00admate qual\u00adity, and the poet\u00adry of the lyrics is sub\u00admerged. It\u2019s not real\u00adly pos\u00adsi\u00adble to fol\u00adlow lyrics in a motet, even if you know the lan\u00adguage well. The best you can do is catch a word here and there. Peo\u00adple didn\u2019t lis\u00adten to motets for the same rea\u00adson they lis\u00adtened to love bal\u00adlads and hero\u00adic lais. The motet was a game. It took famil\u00adiar songs and played with them, twist\u00ading them out of recog\u00adni\u00adtion.
