This noto\u00adri\u00adously frac\u00adtious, unpre\u00addictable, and peri\u00adpatetic band usu\u00adally hov\u00adered some\u00adwhere in between the Doors and <span class=\"caps\">AC<\/span>\/<span class=\"caps\">DC<\/span> in its over\u00adall sound, but ven\u00adtured into all sorts of oth\u00ader moods. Despite their noto\u00adri\u00adous inter\u00adnal bick\u00ader\u00ading and tem\u00adpo\u00adrary split-ups, they have man\u00adaged to remain a force in rock for a quar\u00adter cen\u00adtury. Any\u00adone with a seri\u00adous rock col\u00adlec\u00adtion is like\u00adly to own copies of <em>Love <\/em>(my own favourite) and <em>Son\u00adic Tem\u00adple<\/em>. Their Cana\u00addian tour last year still pulled in huge crowds, espe\u00adcially here in Toron\u00adto.<span id=\"more-645\">&nbsp;<\/span>Dur\u00ading one of their tem\u00adpo\u00adrary split-ups, lead singer Ian Ast\u00adbury start\u00aded up a garage band called Holy Bar\u00adbar\u00adians, which record\u00aded only this one album, in 1999. <em>Cream<\/em> is a decent album, worth play\u00ading now and then, but it illus\u00adtrates how much The Cult ben\u00ade\u00adfit\u00aded from the fine gui\u00adtar play\u00ading of Bil\u00adly Duffy. With\u00adout him to bal\u00adance Ast\u00adbury, the singer often comes across too heavy-hand\u00aded. Some of the songs seem stagy and melo\u00addra\u00admatic. But \u201cOpi\u00adum\u201d is first rate, and \u201cBroth\u00ader Fights\u201d is quite good, too. If you are a Cult fan, pick up this album, not only for the sake of com\u00adplete\u00adness, but to show, by con\u00adtrast, just how the com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of Duffy and Ast\u00adbury worked.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If I were to pick one band to illus\u00adtrate the con\u00advo\u00adluted rock trends of the 1980\u2019s, it would be The Cult.
