{"id":659,"date":"2007-12-07T02:29:57","date_gmt":"2007-12-07T07:29:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/s265039441.onlinehome.us\/philpaine\/?p=659"},"modified":"2018-08-15T18:15:40","modified_gmt":"2018-08-15T22:15:40","slug":"ali-farka-toure-toumani-diabate-in-perfect-sync","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?p=659","title":{"rendered":"Ali Farka Tour\u00e9, Toumani Diabat\u00e9 In Perfect Sync"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I\u2019ve writ\u00adten before about Ali Far\u00adka Tour\u00e9, the sub\u00adlime gui\u00adtarist and song writer Tim\u00adbuk\u00adtu&nbsp;[in blog entry<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?p=432\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\">Think\u00ading of Tim\u00adbuk\u00adtu<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">]. <em>In the Heart of the Moon<\/em> was the sec\u00adond last album he released before his death in March of 2006.&nbsp;Here, he is teamed up with mas\u00adter <em>kora<\/em> play\u00ader Toumani Dia\u00adbat\u00e9, in a spon\u00adta\u00adneous jam ses\u00adsion, with\u00adout rehearsal.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">A few over\u00addubs (some by Ry Cood\u00ader) were lat\u00ader added, but these are dis\u00adcreet, and not intru\u00adsive to the effort\u00adless flow of the ses\u00adsion.&nbsp;All twelve tracks are superb. It is also more tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal, hark\u00ading back to the pre-elec\u00adtric days of the <em>gri\u00adot<\/em> per\u00adform\u00aders of clas\u00adsi\u00adcal Malian music, and mix\u00ading both Song\u00adhai and Bam\u00adbara strains.&nbsp;The cumu\u00adla\u00adtive mood is hyp\u00adnot\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly plea\u00adsur\u00adable. There is no hint of rival\u00adry in the duets.&nbsp;The kora is built from a cal\u00adabash gourd cut in half and cov\u00adered with cow skin, with a notched bridge, putting it rough\u00adly in the man\u00addolin fam\u00adi\u00adly.&nbsp;But it\u2019s played some\u00adwhat like a fla\u00admen\u00adco gui\u00adtar, and the strings give a dis\u00adtinct\u00adly harp-like sound.&nbsp;Dia\u00adbat\u00e9 is per\u00adhaps the finest inter\u00adpreter of this instru\u00adment.&nbsp;Tour\u00e9, as the more famous musi\u00adcian, doesn\u2019t hog the show.&nbsp;He lets the Diabat\u00e9\u2019s kora shine in the lime\u00adlight for most of the songs.&nbsp;The sub\u00adtle\u00adty of their col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion hits the lis\u00adten\u00ader only as one gets well into the album.&nbsp;If you are going to buy three albums to intro\u00adduce your\u00adself to the glo\u00adries of the Malian Renais\u00adsance (for that is what is going on in that coun\u00adtry), then I rec\u00adom\u00admend this album, Tour\u00e9\u2019s <em>The Source<\/em>, and Amadou et Mariam\u2019s <em>Dimanche \u00e0&nbsp;Bamako<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve writ\u00adten before about Ali Far\u00adka Tour\u00e9, the sub\u00adlime gui\u00adtarist and song writer Tim\u00adbuk\u00adtu&nbsp;[in blog entry Think\u00ading of Tim\u00adbuk\u00adtu].
