It\u2019s a short nov\u00adel, deal\u00ading with a sim\u00adple theme, with\u00adout the pre\u00adten\u00adsions and con\u00advo\u00adlu\u00adtions that are thought oblig\u00ada\u00adtory by cur\u00adrent fash\u00adion. It\u2019s set in the late 18th Cen\u00adtury, and nar\u00adrated by an Ital\u00adian who becomes the slave of an Ottoman schol\u00adar, to whom he bears an uncan\u00adny phys\u00adi\u00adcal resem\u00adblance. With knowl\u00adedge of each oth\u00aders\u2019 most inti\u00admate secrets, they become able to exchange iden\u00adti\u00adties. Evliya Chelebi, the great 18th Cen\u00adtury Turk\u00adish poly\u00admath, makes a cameo appear\u00adance, and so does a char\u00adac\u00adter, unnamed, whom I sus\u00adpect is meant to be Gio\u00advanni Pao\u00adlo Marana, an Ital\u00adian author whom I dis\u00adcuss in my <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/philpaine.com\/mycenea\/modules\/content\/index.php?id=180\">Third Med\u00adi\u00adta\u00adtion On Democ\u00adracy<\/a><\/u><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nobel Prize win\u00adner Orhan Pamuk is the lead\u00ading light of mod\u00adern Turk\u00adish fic\u00adtion writ\u00ading.
