The pho\u00adto was tak\u00aden to encour\u00adage more women to join the army, and its staged \u201cIndi\u00adan bless\u00ading\u201d prov\u00ading pop\u00adu\u00adlar, it was wide\u00adly reprint\u00aded dur\u00ading the war, then forgotten.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary Greyeyes was from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan. This tiny com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty (only 367 peo\u00adple live on the reserve) has a remark\u00adable mil\u00adi\u00adtary his\u00adto\u00adry. 56 of its youth served in the armed forces, includ\u00ading sev\u00aden women, most of them named Greyeyes, Arcand or Lafond. Mary Greyeyes joined about the same time that my moth\u00ader joined the Air Force. Muskeg Lake Cree have fought in Europe, Korea, and Afghanistan. Muskeg Lake is also the birth\u00adplace of the bal\u00adlet dancer, chore\u00ado\u00adg\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader and film actor Michael Greyeyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mary returned to Cana\u00adda after fin\u00adish\u00ading her ser\u00advice in 1946, mar\u00adried, and made a career as an indus\u00adtri\u00adal seam\u00adstress in Van\u00adcou\u00adver. She died in 2011. The oth\u00ader par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpant in the staged pho\u00adto was Har\u00adry Ball, a Cree from Piapot First Nation, who was a World War I vet\u00ader\u00adan. His Plains Chief regalia was scrounged up on that reserve, where the pho\u00adto was taken.<\/span><\/p>\n
