A cel\u00adlo or a vio\u00adla da gam\u00adba will move me much more eas\u00adily than any vio\u00adlin, and I get all dreamy if I hear a con\u00adtra\u00adbas\u00adsoon even tun\u00ading up. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.edgarmeyer.com\/\">Edgar Mey\u00ader<\/a><\/span> is wide\u00adly regard\u00aded as the finest dou\u00adble-bassist alive. But I will con\u00adsider him here as a com\u00adposer. Now, many ter\u00adrific solo per\u00adform\u00aders have giv\u00aden forth embarass\u00ading turkeys when they turned to com\u00adpos\u00ading, but this is not the case with Mey\u00ader. His <em>Dou\u00adble Con\u00adcerto for Cel\u00adlo and Dou\u00adble Bass<\/em>, which he per\u00adforms with the inim\u00aditable cel\u00adlist Yo-Yo Ma, has none of the surly chug\u00adging along you expect from the instru\u00adment. It\u2019s a spright\u00adly com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtion, with pleas\u00adant melodies, and some sar\u00adcas\u00adtic pas\u00adsages that Prokofiev would be proud of.<span id=\"more-71\">&nbsp;<\/span>The <em>Con\u00adcerto in D for Dou\u00adble Bass and Orches\u00adtra<\/em>, is down\u00adright weird. It starts with lit\u00adtle waft\u00aded frag\u00adments of melody, resolv\u00ading them every now and then into an orches\u00adtral <em>tut\u00adti<\/em>, and plays lit\u00adtle games of syn\u00adco\u00adpa\u00adtion and call-and-answer. The sec\u00adond you think you know where the piece is head\u00aded, it twists out of it like a wrestler break\u00ading a Boston crab grapevine leg lock. It even\u00adtu\u00adally drifts into a slight\u00adly sin\u00adis\u00adter and puz\u00adzling end\u00ading. The over\u00adall effect is sur\u00adpris\u00adingly pleasing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mey\u00ader is a long-time friend of folk ban\u00adjo vir\u00adtu\u00adoso B\u00e9la Fleck, and they\u2019ve put out an album togeth\u00ader that I\u2019m most eager to hear.
