Most of the club stuff from that era hasn\u2019t worn well \u2015 lis\u00adten\u00ading to the aver\u00adage Chris Shep\u00adpard com\u00adpi\u00adla\u00adtion can be pret\u00adty painful. But Karl Hyde (vocals), Rick Smith and Dar\u00adren Emer\u00adson made a cre\u00adative m\u00e9lange of tech\u00adno-house-dub-funk that can still be played with\u00adout embar\u00adrass\u00adment. <span id=\"more-747\"><\/span>The vocals actu\u00adally fit in to the mix, rather than sim\u00adply being a kind of hal\u00adlelu\u00adjah cho\u00adrus thrown in so you can remem\u00adber which set you\u2019re lis\u00adten\u00ading to. But the strongest ele\u00adment is its pro\u00adgres\u00adsion, the nec\u00ades\u00adsary build-up of emo\u00adtion, in this case start\u00ading with harsh cyn\u00adi\u00adcism (\u201cDark and Long\u201d) through con\u00adtem\u00adpla\u00adtive (\u201cMmmm Sky\u00adscraper I Love You\u201d), recharg\u00ading (\u201cSpoon\u00adman\u201d) and cli\u00admax (\u201cCow\u00adgirl\u201d). This must have made for one of those deliri\u00adously sat\u00adis\u00adfy\u00ading dance floor expe\u00adri\u00adences that the club scene was all about. I have a dif\u00adfer\u00adent mix of \u201cDark and Long\u201d labeled \u201cDark Train Mix\u201d on the enter\u00adtain\u00ading com\u00adpi\u00adla\u00adtion <span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span> Trib\u00adal Gath\u00ader\u00ading \u201995.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The sec\u00adond album, <em>Sec\u00adond Tough\u00adest In the Infants <\/em>(1996) shifts to what came to be called \u201cPro\u00adgres\u00adsive House\u201d, influ\u00adenced by the mul\u00adti-lay\u00adered art-rock of the sev\u00aden\u00adties, but retain\u00ading the dance\u00adable tech\u00adno beat. There are audi\u00adble hints of Yes and Gen\u00ade\u00adsis. As in the first album, many of the songs are dark and moody. The re-release of this album includes a bonus track of \u201cBorn Slip\u00adpy .<span class=\"caps\">NUXX<\/span>\u201d, which had wide\u00adspread expo\u00adsure through the film <em>Trainspot\u00adting<\/em>. I also have \u201c2 Months Off [King Unique Sunspots Vocal Mix]\u201d and \u201cKing Of Snake [Fat\u00adboy Slim Remix]\u201d on two dif\u00adfer\u00adent Shep\u00adpard col\u00adlec\u00adtions.
