This was the most pop\u00adu\u00adlar play in Eliz\u00ada\u00adbethan Eng\u00adland before the arrival of Shake\u00adspeare (it was appar\u00adently first per\u00adformed around 1582). Shake\u00adspeare was clear\u00adly influ\u00adenced by it in some ways. It\u2019s a bru\u00adtally vio\u00adlent and lurid study of revenge. I couldn\u2019t find any audio or video per\u00adfor\u00admance of it. The poet\u00adry doesn\u2019t exact\u00adly call up any admi\u00adra\u00adtion, though Kyd gets some amus\u00ading effects when he has char\u00adac\u00adters alter\u00adnate sin\u00adgle lines in a kind of rapid-fire pat\u00adter. We don\u2019t know much about Kyd, and not much of his work has sur\u00advived. He is reput\u00aded to have writ\u00adten the \u201cUr-Ham\u00adlet\u201d, the treat\u00adment of the Dan\u00adish sto\u00adry that Ham\u00adlet <\/em>is said to have either revamped or sup\u00adplanted, but which has not sur\u00advived. He was not as skill\u00adful at elud\u00ading the cen\u00adsors as Shake\u00adspeare. For var\u00adi\u00adous impi\u00adeties, he was impris\u00adoned and tor\u00adtured. His career ruined, he died at the age of 35. He had been Marlowe\u2019s room mate for awhile. Mar\u00adlowe was either assas\u00adsi\u00adnated for polit\u00adi\u00adcal rea\u00adsons, or in ran\u00addom brawl, depend\u00ading on the biographer\u2019s incli\u00adna\u00adtion. Being a play\u00adwright was a rough game, in those days.<\/p>\n
