One is set in dur\u00ading World War <span class=\"caps\">II<\/span>, and focus\u00ades on a desert\u00ader from the navy, who is on the run in back\u00adwoods New\u00adfound\u00adland. Anoth\u00ader sto\u00adry cen\u00adters on, Nan\u00adcy Shanawhdit, the last known native Beothuk, who died of tuber\u00adcu\u00adlo\u00adsis in 1829. The third focus\u00ades on a foren\u00adsic pathol\u00ado\u00adgist at Cam\u00adbridge, U.K., whose life is strange\u00adly altered by the first two sto\u00adries, and by her expe\u00adri\u00adences dur\u00ading the geno\u00adcide in Rwan\u00adda. It\u2019s an odd com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion, but Ber\u00adnice Mor\u00adgan makes them work togeth\u00ader with a decep\u00adtive&nbsp;ease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"more-813\"><\/span>One detail that struck me. The sailors and sol\u00addiers in wartime New\u00adfound\u00adland includ\u00aded New\u00adfound\u00adlan\u00adders, Cana\u00addi\u00adans, and Amer\u00adi\u00adcans. New\u00adfound\u00adland had not joined Cana\u00adda, and for most of the his\u00adtory that pre\u00adceded that union (in 1948), lit\u00adtle love was lost between the two coun\u00adtries. In <em>Cloud of Bone<\/em>, the New\u00adfound\u00adlan\u00adders have reg\u00adu\u00adlar, and rel\u00ada\u00adtively good-natured fist\u00adfights and brawls with the Amer\u00adi\u00adcans, usu\u00adally over access to dance-hall girls, but the fights with Cana\u00addi\u00adans are far more vio\u00adlent, and far from good-natured.
