But most of it is rea\u00adson\u00adable and use\u00adful. Of spe\u00adcial inter\u00adest to&nbsp;me:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"more-823\"><\/span><em>The basic dis\u00adtinc\u00adtions that traders <\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: red;\">[North West Com\u00adpany and Hudson\u2019s Bay Com\u00adpany traders liv\u00ading among the Colum\u00adbia Plateau Indi\u00adans\u2013 P.P] <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>drew between \u201cfish\u00ading\u201d and \u201chunt\u00ading\u201d peo\u00adples illus\u00adtrates well the pow\u00ader of con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary dis\u00adcourse con\u00adcern\u00ading the influ\u00adence of envi\u00adron\u00adment on soci\u00adety. As is made clear in the chap\u00adters that fol\u00adlow, the iden\u00adti\u00adties these labels describe are in large part inven\u00adtions of the traders. All Plateau peo\u00adples includ\u00aded a range of sub\u00adsis\u00adtence strate\u00adgies \u2014 fish\u00ading, gath\u00ader\u00ading, and hunt\u00ading \u2014 in their sea\u00adsonal round\u2026 The empha\u00adsis itself was sea\u00adson\u00adally and his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcally vari\u00adable, how\u00adever, and com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties described as \u201chunters\u201d at oth\u00ader times gath\u00adered and fished.\u2026 \u2026 As for the influ\u00adence of envi\u00adron\u00adment on \u201chunters\u2019 and \u201cfish\u00aderme,\u201d the groups that occu\u00adpied the banks of the Colum\u00adbia Riv\u00ader were cast as hope\u00adlessly indo\u00adlent, sup\u00adpos\u00adedly because the riv\u00ader \u201cafford(s) an abun\u00addant pro\u00advi\u00adsion at lit\u00adtle trou\u00adble for a great part of the year.\u201d Those who lived in areas that were rich\u00ader in ani\u00admal life, and par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly those who hunt\u00aded on the buf\u00adfalo plains, were judged far more indus\u00adtri\u00adous.
