It remained unfin\u00adished by Carl Maria von Weber at his death, and was \u201ccom\u00adplet\u00aded\u201d by a young Gus\u00adtav Mahler (before even his first sym\u00adpho\u00adny, when he had only achieved suc\u00adcess as a con\u00adduc\u00adtor). The \u201ccom\u00adple\u00adtion\u201d involved scor\u00ading the bulk of the opera, for Weber had left only a jum\u00adble of sketch\u00ades, which Mahler had to \u201cdecode\u201d, orches\u00adtrate, and sup\u00adple\u00adment with com\u00adplete new num\u00adbers. The plot is pure sit\u00adcom \u2015 fun\u00adny drunk scenes, mis\u00adtak\u00aden iden\u00adti\u00adty, every\u00adthing resolved at a wed\u00adding. Since half a cen\u00adtu\u00adry sep\u00ada\u00adrates Weber\u2019s death from Mahler\u2019s recon\u00adstruc\u00adtion, the opera has an odd sense of belong\u00ading in no time peri\u00adod. In that half cen\u00adtu\u00adry, opera, and indeed all music, had mutat\u00aded so much that one can nor\u00admal\u00adly dis\u00adtin\u00adguish&nbsp;some\u00adthing from Weber\u2019s time from Mahler\u2019s with\u00adout hav\u00ading heard it before, but <em>Die drei Pin\u00adtos<\/em> would keep you guess\u00ading. I\u2019ll have to say, how\u00adev\u00ader, that while Mahler\u2019s orches\u00adtra\u00adtion gives hints of many fea\u00adtures of his lat\u00ader sym\u00adphonies, mak\u00ading the piece super\u00adfi\u00adcial\u00adly more \u201cmod\u00adern\u201d, it\u2019s Weber\u2019s orig\u00adi\u00adnal melodies that give the work its charm, and they are firm\u00adly anchored in his own time. The record\u00ading I have, a Nax\u00ados issue of a live per\u00adfor\u00admance (you can hear thud\u00adding on the floor-boards), fea\u00adtures Gun\u00adnar Gud\u00adb\u00adj\u00f6rns\u00adson, Alessan\u00addro Svab, Bar\u00adbara Zech\u00admeis\u00adter, and was con\u00adduct\u00aded by Pao\u00adlo Arriv\u00adabeni.
