Writ\u00adten in 1799 and 1800, Bethoven\u2019s Sym\u00adphony No. 1 in C Major, Op. 21 could be described as \u201csar\u00adcas\u00adtic Haydn\u201d. It sounds some\u00adthing like a mature Haydn sym\u00adphony, but it has a weird open\u00ading meant to con\u00adfuse you about the key. It has a <em>min\u00aduetto<\/em> move\u00adment that sounds like it\u2019s being danced by metham\u00adphet\u00ada\u00admine addicts. It has a kind of fake \u201cstart\u201d in the last move\u00adment. All quite weird. We tend to think of Beethoven as humour\u00adless, but he did occa\u00adsion\u00adal\u00adly show a sense of humour \u2014 sort of a Scot\u00adtish put-piss-in-your-beer-glass kind of fun. Some of the stan\u00addard Beethoven fea\u00adtures are already there, like the strong role for wood\u00adwinds and the addic\u00adtion to <em>sforza\u00adto<\/em>, which seem to have dis\u00adtin\u00adguished him from Haydn right from the begin\u00adning. But the debt is real\u00adly obvi\u00adous in this first sym\u00adphony. It\u2019s only in the third sym\u00adphony that Beethoven real\u00adly broke loose from the fold. I haven\u2019t actu\u00adally lis\u00adtened to this one close\u00adly for years (it\u2019s prob\u00ada\u00adbly Beethoven\u2019s least pop\u00adu\u00adlar sym\u00adphony), so it came at me like a fresh&nbsp;piece.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Haydn is the foun\u00adtain\u00adhead from which both Mozart and Beethoven sprung forth.
